Compare guestbook services
There are still a good number of free guestbook services around, and they make different choices: hosted page or embedded widget, ads or none, HTML in messages or plain text. There are also comment systems used as guestbooks, scripts you can install yourself, and services that have closed. These pages put the facts side by side so you can pick what suits your site.
How these comparisons are made
We describe other services only with statements taken from their own websites, checked in September 2026, and we say where each fact comes from; where a site is silent we write "not stated" rather than guess. We do not rate them, and we leave out anything we could not verify. Services change, so please confirm current features, prices and terms on their sites before you decide. UltraGuest is not affiliated with any service mentioned here; their names belong to their owners.
The comparisons
Service by service
- UltraGuest vs SmartGB – two hosted guestbook pages with different approaches to themes, ads and links.
- UltraGuest vs Atabook – the hosted page most often cited in the Neocities and 32-Bit Cafe threads we read, next to ours.
- UltraGuest vs Bravenet Guestbooks – an embedded guestbook with HTML in posts and paid plans, next to a linked page.
- UltraGuest vs Webweav.ing – the 32-Bit Cafe's embeddable guestbook, launched in 2026.
- UltraGuest vs Website Goodies – two long-running hosted guestbook pages.
- UltraGuest vs HTML Comment Box – a hosted guestbook page next to an embedded comment widget.
Overviews
- Free guestbook services compared – eleven services in one table, with a source for each.
- Guestbooks and comment systems – when a comment system is the better tool, and when a guestbook is.
- Hosted or self-hosted – scripts and plugins you install yourself, and what a hosted service does instead.
Practical questions
- Guestbooks for Neocities and other static hosts – what a free Neocities site allows and which services work there.
- What happened to 123Guestbook, MyGB.nl and others – closed services, with advice on keeping your messages.
How UltraGuest describes itself
So that the other pages can be read on their own, here is our side in the same neutral terms:
- Free guestbook hosting since 2003, run independently. No ads, no tracking cookies and no data sales today; if that ever changed it would be announced on the privacy commitments page first.
- The guestbook is a page on ultraguest.com that you link to; the Control Panel provides the link code.
- Colours, fonts, a background image, a header text and full custom CSS.
- Guestbook pages in 24 languages, translated by the community.
- Human verification (Cloudflare Turnstile) on every post, no links in messages, rate limits and automatic content rules; optional approval of new messages, a word filter, private messages and blocked IP addresses.
- E-mail notifications, an RSS feed, smilies, up to three custom fields and visitor statistics.
- Download everything as JSON or CSV and delete the account yourself, at any time.
- And what it does not do, so nobody is surprised: no embed code (the guestbook is a link, not an iframe or a script), no owner replies, and no import of messages from another service.
