Guestbooks for Neocities and other static hosts

Neocities is static hosting: you upload HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and there is no PHP or database to run a guestbook of your own, so a guestbook always comes from elsewhere, and since 2024 the question has been which ones still work on a free account. This page gathers what the services and the community say, as read in September 2026, and where UltraGuest fits. UltraGuest is not affiliated with Neocities or any service named here.

What a free Neocities site allows

Since January 2024, new free Neocities accounts have had a content security policy that stops scripts and forms on your pages from talking to other domains; it is documented on a page hosted on Neocities (content-security-policy.neocities.org) and was discussed in an issue on the Neocities GitHub repository that month. A widget that loads a script from its own server, or a form that posts to it, therefore does not work on a new free site, while, in that page's words, iframed websites are not subject to the policy; a plain link is ordinary HTML and is never affected. The same sources say the paid Supporter plan removes the restriction.

What that means for each option

What embedding needs, and what a link needs

Embedding means the guestbook appears inside your page; on a free Neocities site that needs an iframe, and on a Supporter account or a host without such a policy a script widget works too. A link needs nothing at all, and UltraGuest is deliberately that kind: the Control Panel gives you the HTML for a "View Guestbook" and a "Sign Guestbook" link, you paste it into your index.html or a guestbook.html page and upload, and visitors open the guestbook as its own page and come back through a link. There is no embed code, and the guestbook is not meant to sit inside another page; to make it feel like part of your site, copy your colours into Design › Colors and Style or paste your stylesheet into Design › Edit CSS. The same goes for Nekoweb and any other static host.

Which one is for you?

If you want the guestbook inside your page on a free Neocities site, the community's answers are an iframe of an Atabook page or Webweav.ing's iframe (with a 32-Bit Cafe account); on a Supporter account the script widgets open up again. If you want something that works on every account and every static host, and never shows an ad, link to an UltraGuest guestbook: one line of HTML, and the setup guide has a section for Neocities.
