| Message | I did my first and last double century with Nick two years ago at the Davis Double. Ironically, Nick was also my first biking buddy back in 1977. We grew up together on Azucena Ave. tearing up the neighborhood on our bikes. The Davis Double was the first time I had seen Nick since high school. We had reconnected on Facebook, and it was Nick who reached out and encouraged me to join him on the Davis Double. I was glad I did. It was a great day, despite going through four spare tubes between us within the first 20 miles. Nick would drop me like a bad habit on the climbs, but would always be waiting to regroup at the top. We got to spend the whole day catching up, and taking our time on the ride. We talked about his family and the trips they had taken, the trips they were going to take, and how much he was looking forward to the ride across California the next year with Nicholas. He was so excited for that event!
Nick had all the attributes I really respect in a person: intelligence, kindness, strength, patience. Frankly, he was just a good guy. He was a large part of my life when I was young, and I’m a better person because of it. I’m thankful I got to know him again, and thankful I got to ride with him again. I’ll always remember him. What’s the right number of bikes? Just one more! |
