MessageGood morning all!! This is Connie, Johnnie's eldest daughter. I am posting this because my Mom has a small request. She is looking for a "Spangler" ball hat for my Dad. He is beginning to loose his hair, after only 1 chemo treatment. My Dad would be so proud to wear the hat!! He is very proud of his Navy days, and talks about them often. Dad is so patriotic; he hangs his American flag out at 8AM and takes it down at 8PM every day! He has all kinds of patrotic stuff, and also has all kinds of Navy stuff sitting all around the house. He is proud of his country, and his service to his country. If anyone knows where we could get one of these hats, please email me. My Mom would be so grateful, and my Dad so proud!!
Thank you,
Connie

MessageMy name is Barbara, I'm Johnnie's middle daughter...or as I've always told him, the son that he never had. Dad is very ill right now but is putting up a pretty good front. Thanks to all for your prayers and to all who have contacted him.
He is very proud of his Navy days and all who served with him. From the stories Dad has shared, he had a wonderful group of guys on the Spangler with him, of course, I think Dad was the best looking ;o) I still wonder how in the world he kept his hat on with all of that hair!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your friendship, memories and support for my Father, he's the best a daughter could ever ask, hope or dream for.

MessageHello. I am Connie, the oldest of Johnnie's 3 daughters. I would like to thank those of you who have called Dad. It has really lifted his spirits to hear from you again. Dad has been in the hospital for the past 2 weeks, but should come home within the next few days (we hope!). If any of you would like to contact me, my email is [email protected]. I would be more than happy to pass along any info to my Dad. I hope you will post pics of the time you served with my Dad on the USS Spangler DE696, in the early 50's. I would love to see more. Thanks!! smilie

MessageI am writing this without my father's knowledge, I am the youngest of his 3 daughters.Daddy served on the Spangler from 1953 until (I believe) 1956. My Dad is not doing so well and his time may be limited. If anyone out there remembers him, it would make his day to hear from you. I don't know much about his service history as I came along in 1965 and am the only "Buckeye" in the bunch. I do know that Charles Trull & Richard Sims were among a few that he mentioned (that I can remember). If you would like his home address please contact me at [email protected] (my name is Adrienne)or at Mom's website ([email protected]). He would love to hear from you!

MessageMy Grandfather Harold (Sam) Frankhouser was on the 1943 crew (left sometime in '45 I believe although it doesn't appear in the deck log). He passed away in 1992. This site is wonderful. It gives so much information about his time on ship that I never knew about. Thanks so much for the hard work and putting so much great information on the internet. I have been sharing information with my family.

MessageThis message is for Lee Elmore. I see that he is listed as a contact, so whoever reads this message please pass it along to Mr. Elmore. I am trying to find out more about my Grandfather Morgan Eugene Hamblin (Gene Hamblin) and more specificly his experiences in the Navy. My Grandfather was a COX aboard the USS Spangler in 1946 and possibly in 1945 and 1944, I don't have crew lists for '44 and '45 so I can't confirm he was apart of the crew in those years. I would like to know if, by chance, did Mr. Elmore know my grand father as he was a COX also in 1944, '45, and '46. I am currently serving in the USAF Active Duty as a Weather Forecaster and my Grandfather is only one of two people in my family to have served in the military and the only one to serve durring a time of war. To find someone who might have known my Grandfather would be priceless as he did not talk about his time in the Navy and passed away when I was very young. Knowing some of the things that he went through and experienced would help me in my service to the Country. So please, if you can, put me in touch with Mr. Elmore. Kip Anderson 808-236-4037 or [email protected]. Thanks.

MessageI am the son of Gene Fribis, pictured in #16 and # 33. My father died in 1993 after 40 years ownership in a lawnmower sales and service shop business. The business was located just outside of St. Louis where my father was born and lived his entire life. I recall that he served on the ship in 1945 and stayed on after the war ended for a trip extending from the Pacific through the Indian Ocean, the Suez Canal, across the Atlantic and came home for good in late 1945 or early 1946.
