MessageLoved K.I. Sawyer!!!
Was stationed there from Jun 1981 - Feb 1991 as an Air Traffic Controller and Eventually was the liaison between the 2001st Comm Squadron and the flight crews. Being from Wisconsin originally enabled me to fit right in at K.I. and enjoy all that the Base and the area had to offer. I made many great friends there not only through the Air Traffic Controllers, but also in playing sports with the base people and the locals in Gwinn, Little Lake and Marquette. To this day our son still lives in Little Lake, works on the old base and our grandchildren attend the K.I. school. That place will always hold a very special spot in my heart and so will the people of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan!

MessageI was stationed at KI from 1970-1973 as overnight maintenance on the 101 and the 106. I think we had the longest shift on the base (1600-0830) or until we finished the job we were on. But I loved every minute of it. Miss the area but not the snow so much. Retired in 1989 to Marquette and was sad when the base closed. I now live in the "middle" of Indiana close to Grissom AFB

MessageLotsa memories as a student on the base from 1964-5 until 1968-9. Heads down during take-offs, sonic booms and eccentric locals. Hope to return to the area with time to visit as an adult. Thanks for keeping the memory and spirit of the Flying Tigers alive!
