MessageHi to all! Great messages from everyone! Enlisted in the Air Force in Milwaukee(home) in Dec 65. Was stationed at K.I.Sawyer from Aug 66 to Jan 70.I worked as a crew chief in the jet engine shop(410FMS)on the TF33's. Did a little flight line service too. I lived down in "the hole" in barracks 832, second floor, right in back of the linen exchange building off of ave AA.I went on several different TDY's from KI, the most memorable was a "Young Tiger" mission to Utapao,Thailand in last part of 1968. Spent a lot of fun times in the NCO Club and the base bowling alley. Had some great times at KI, but don't miss the winters. I remember it snowing on a July 4th weekend. I still communicate with a lot of guys I use to work with. Most of the guys I served with were from this area(WI, Mich, Ill) I remember Rosie's pizza, Browns tavern, the bowling alley in Gwinn. Also the trips to Marquette, Ishpeming and Negaunee. Saw some videos on Youtube about present day KI and it breaks my heart to see it run down and empty, a once very proud SAC base. It's on my bucket list to get back to KI after 40+ years of being gone.
Thanks to everyone for your service
John, Kaukauna, Wi.

MessageWas stationed at K.I.Sawyer as my first duty station out of Tech school, June of 1972, assigned to the FMS IFR shop, shop chief was Keith LeMoine. Worked my way up to get real good at troubleshooting and repairing refueling booms both in the shop and on test flights. We were then cross trained into the HYD/IFR shop with Ken Shoemaker as shop chief. Shortly after that we were IFR/HYD/Fuel cell, Shop chief Robert Betts and Ken Acker. I worked in those shops until June of 1983 (10.5 years) (New assignment, Hickam AFB HI.) still to this day I wish I had a Nickel for every B-52 brake and KC-135 brake and refueling nozzle I rebuilt smilie, I enjoyed my tour at Sawyer. Little did I know that it would be the most closely knit group of people I would be stationed with for the rest of my career, was just like having an extended family. I still have friends in the Sawyer area that I get to see every couple of years when I go back in early August to pick blueberries near where the ammo storage used to be. It was soo hard to see the old base in such disrepair after closure. We had it looking REAL good when I was there. Anyone remember extra duty painting nearly everything CREACH BROWN? At least the Water tower and the aircraft tails had some color in the "Someplace Special" LOGO. I went on with 4 at Hickam and 6 at Luke AFB AZ. TAC is NOT a place for a SAC man. So, I retired in Feb 1992. Currently work as SR Tech in Appleton WIsc at Gulfstream aerospace. See some of you at the reunion???

MessageI was stationed at KI as a TSgt with the 87 FIS from 1984-1985 as we put the F106s into AMARG. I was in the avionics comm/nav backshop working along side the MA1 folks. Seems a long time ago now, but good memories.

MessageLoved K.I. Sawyer!!!
Was stationed there from Jun 1981 - Feb 1991 as an Air Traffic Controller and Eventually was the liaison between the 2001st Comm Squadron and the flight crews. Being from Wisconsin originally enabled me to fit right in at K.I. and enjoy all that the Base and the area had to offer. I made many great friends there not only through the Air Traffic Controllers, but also in playing sports with the base people and the locals in Gwinn, Little Lake and Marquette. To this day our son still lives in Little Lake, works on the old base and our grandchildren attend the K.I. school. That place will always hold a very special spot in my heart and so will the people of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan!

MessageI was stationed at KI from 1970-1973 as overnight maintenance on the 101 and the 106. I think we had the longest shift on the base (1600-0830) or until we finished the job we were on. But I loved every minute of it. Miss the area but not the snow so much. Retired in 1989 to Marquette and was sad when the base closed. I now live in the "middle" of Indiana close to Grissom AFB
