MessageRobert Melendrez,
Yes I am sure the food was excellent but what I remember the most was the warm hospitality your grandparents gave us. I'm sure George Shimmons was there but can't recall if it was just us two. George had a 39 pontiac and we did indeed make many trips up US Highway 101 between San Diego and the LA area. That was a killer road in those days with passing lanes which caused many head-on crashes when the wrong person used the passing lane.

MessageBob Ellis and other Shipmates of 50-54
Its amazing how as we grow older the good times grow more vivid and the mid watches grow more dim. I went aboard Spangler at 17 and left at 21, so you can say that I grew up on her. My health has gone down hill in the last few years so I have not been able to attend any reunions except the one in Indanoplis, but every year my thoughts and prayers are with you guys at reunion time, At the next reunion stop for a moment to remember all of the shipmates age has caught up with and would otherwise be with you, GOD bless and smooth sailing.

MessageJames Howard and Bob Ellis,
Thanks for the messages about my dad, Mel. Yes, my grandparents did live near Compton in the early 50's, so you probably got a taste of my grandma's great cooking! smilie

Dad and I talked about going to a Spangler reunion a few years ago, but his health had begun to fail. I wish we could have made it. Dad was real proud of his tour on the Spangler, and had fond memories of you guys.

Thanks again for the messages, and best wishes!

Rob "Mel" Melendrez

MessageGreetings to Ed Melendez son. Mel was my mentor in thRadar gang. He took me Stan Biess and Charles Kimbrell out of the deck div as raw SA s made Radarmen out of us. I remember Simmons,Simpson and Pena. There qwere a couple of others but time and memory fail me. I talked to Mel 5 or 6 years ago and the first thing he said to me was you made 1st class, good going. I tried to call him aftyer Bert Huls died but the number that I had was not in service. Mel was good for me as a 17 year old fresh in the Navy and I have good memories of him.

MessageHello Robert Melendrez. i believe your dad was from Compton at the time of his tour on the Spangler. If that is so he invited a couple of us, most likely George Shimmons and myself, to his home for Sunday dinner sometime in 1951 or 52. We met his family and had a wonderful day with I guess your grandparents. My memory is somewhat in question now but if it wasn't your dad it was another Radarman whoses family we did get to visit in the Compton area.
