| Message | Most of us that served on Spangler are getting on in age but I like a lot of you have great memories of my Spangler days. I went aboard 11-50, SA fresh out of Boot. Spent 3 months in Deck gang and then got to be a Radarman striker. Iapplied for and went to Class A Radar school..This enabled me to progress very rapidly, 3rd,2nd and finally 1st class Radarman. I can say that I grew up on Spangler, went aboard at 17, came off before I was 21. I lefty 5-54. A lot of the guys I served with are now gone but I remember a lot of them . Kimbrell. Biess,Hitt,Baum, Bard,Duncan. These are just a few of RDs that I was priveledge to serve. My greastest honor was when poutof the blue 10 years ago I received aphone call from Lt Burt Huls, my ops officer and later XO. To be rembered by him after all those years made me feel proud of my sewrvice. I maintained contact with him until he passed away a couple of years ago. I am proud to stand upand declair I am a Spangler s ailor |

| Message | Hello shipmates. I served on the uss Spangler during ww2....serving 2 years, 8 months and one day...Recalling shake downs in Bermuda before heading to Boston. Dec 43 we went through the Panama canal and then to the south pacific. We sailed with the uss England when she sunk her sixth jap sub. We patrolled around Iwo Jima. Many dead Japanese along the coastline. Okinawa was another grueling experience. Many ships were hit up there. I've been fortunate to attend a couple of reunions...one in indianapolis and another in st. Louis. I was born in Springfield il and have lived here all my life. You may have seen my drawing of the Spangler on this website. I drew this picture while on the ship.. Sorry to say that my wife of 66 years, Betty Marie, passed on February 8. We met right after the war, married and raised five children. Saluting all my fellow Spangler shipmates....first class seaman TJ Smith |
