MessageI've written up a short piece about my father's service aboard the Spangler during and immediately after WWII. There are also some photos. Who can I contact about adding these to your collection?

His name was also John Spears, and he was aboard in 1945 and 1946.

MessageWalter Viscum, a plank owner and original crew member on the USS Spangler died yesterday July 7, 2013 at his home in Joliet, IL. I believe he was either the last or one of the last two WW2 crew members who were from Illinois.

MessageHi Christine, as I wrote in my email response to you it was wonderful hearing from you. The error in LCDR H. M. Edwards' initials is now corrected. I asked in the email if you knew when he departed the Spangler? In looking through the ship's deck logs for 11/30/1945, I discovered that LCDR Harold M. Edwards departed on 11/10/1945.

If you haven't done so yet, please look at the crew photo for 1946. It was taken on January of that year, about a month and a half following your uncle's departure. Most of the crew and officers in the picture would have served under his command.

MessageI was so glad to find your website for the USS Spangler! My uncle, Harold Marion Edwards, was commander of the ship at the end of the war, as indicated in the paragraph of your history that begins, "In Feb. 1945..." The section about him begins on the 5th line of that paragraph: "On March 13th, LCDR H. H. Edwards, USNR, relieved CDR MacFarland as Commanding Officer." I would like to have my uncle's middle initial corrected: he was H.M. (Harold Marion) Edwards, not H.H. If you let me know how and where to send it, I can supply more information about him, including a copy of a letter he wrote to my parents from the ship in late September 1945 while en route to port in California. Thanks again, and I hope to hear back! (This note is to correct an error in the one I sent earlier.)

MessageMost of us that served on Spangler are getting on in age but I like a lot of you have great memories of my Spangler days. I went aboard 11-50, SA fresh out of Boot. Spent 3 months in Deck gang and then got to be a Radarman striker. Iapplied for and went to Class A Radar school..This enabled me to progress very rapidly, 3rd,2nd and finally 1st class Radarman. I can say that I grew up on Spangler, went aboard at 17, came off before I was 21. I lefty 5-54. A lot of the guys I served with are now gone but I remember a lot of them . Kimbrell. Biess,Hitt,Baum, Bard,Duncan. These are just a few of RDs that I was priveledge to serve. My greastest honor was when poutof the blue 10 years ago I received aphone call from Lt Burt Huls, my ops officer and later XO. To be rembered by him after all those years made me feel proud of my sewrvice. I maintained contact with him until he passed away a couple of years ago. I am proud to stand upand declair I am a Spangler s
