MessageAll my life I have heard of Henry River. My grandfather, Robert Hartwell Raby and his wife, Colene, from Hudson, NC (Caldwell County), were once ministers, evangalists, missonaries, or something like that in Henry River. My mother, Louise Raby Mullinax, was only a child then. It was during their ministry in Henry River that her mother, Colene Raby, died in 1942 at the age of 30. My mother was only 13 and her brother, Wayne, was only 6 at the time of their mother's passing. My grandmother, Colene, is buried at the Cline Cemetary in Henry River. Just recently, the owner of the cemetary, Maxine Cooke, herself an older person now, contact me concerning the cemetary. My grandfather, Hartwell, and my Mother, Louise are now both gone on. My father, now 83, still is fulfilling their wishes to keep flowers on the grave. Mrs. Cooke had seen my father and sister there at the cemetary and shared with them her concerns that no one was able to maintain the cemetary any longer. My sister gave Mrs. Cooke my name. Because I work for a municipality, she felt I might be able to help with a solution. My question to the guestbook is: Does anyone recall a minister by the name of Hartwell Raby? Does anyone recall which church he worked with? Can anyone have any reasons as to why my grandmother would have been buried in this private cemetary? Was it once affiliated with a church? Any information would be helpful. I find the info about Henry River very interesting. Thanks.

MessageMy wife Charlett just showed me the history about the old Henry River mill, and I am so glad she did. We moved to North Carolina in 2002 and we past the mill quite often. It reminds me of the mills in Penn. where I grow up at.This site is very interesting and I hope to see more in the future. I would also like to see the mill become a historical site for the families to come.

MessageI would just like to say thank you to all the people who have given their imput on the history of the Henry River village. I have been searching for months on the history of Henry River and happened to come upon it today by accident.I don't know if I have any family decendents from here, but I love the knowledge of past history. I noticed that the town of Hildebran has a high decendent percentage of germans. My fathers' side of the family are decendents of Germany. from the late 1800's to the early 1900s. I look forward to seeing and learning more about the Henry River village.
thank you, Charlett Andresky

MessageWe stopped by last Saturday and bumped into the agent who is selling this wonderful area. I wish we had the money to purchase it and put it back the way it was. I think it should be a historical park. Just walking around and looking at some of the buildings, you could almost feel it's spirit wandering. I would love to learn more about it. I didn't have my camera with me, but I plan on returning to take some photos. smilie

MessageMy husband and I were on our way to the park when the ghost town of Henry River came out of nowhere. It was truly fascinating, it seemed like the village had just stopped at a moment in time and the rest of the world had gone on around it.

It's important that people don't forget this part of their history or the people who lived it. I hope you are able to get it on the National Registry. And that the stories continue to be told.

MessageViewing this site brought back many memories. As kids growing up there was an adventure. Rick Hames, Ray Burns, Gary & Joe Lynn were the guys I ran with. Throwing rocks on the tin roofed homes on Haloween, turning over outhouses, swiming at the dam, diving off the wing wall were some of our activities. Thanks for keeping these memories alive.

MessageA friend and I came across this old mill and was astonished to see it there. I'm glad I found this web site and I hope that someone is able to restore it and teach people of the history that once was there.

MessageI stumbled across Henry River Village while enjoying exploring the Hickory area. What a wonderful surpise when I wondered upon the village. What great history. I was sad to see a for sale sign. I hope someone with a love for history buys the land and is able to preserve the village and surroundings. What a shame it would be for it to be wiped away for new homes or a business. We are losing too much of our heritage now. I hope for the people in the area and folks like me,who enjoy wondering up on little jewels, that it will remain. Thank you for this site.
