MessageI have a Zippo lighter engraved "U.S.S. Randolph CVA 15" with an image of the ship, and some kind of military insignia. The back of the lighter has color pictures of 5 different flags and is engraved "E" award 1955 and CNO Safety Award 1955. I think this might have very special meaning to someone who was involved in earning this award, or their family, and I would like them to have it. I love the thrill of finding "treasure" at garage sales and flea markets, and the most satisfying aspect is getting it into the hands of someone who would cherish it. I don't want the lighter to go to a collector, or to someone who wants it to sell. If it would be meaningful to you, please contact me @ 419 543 1010 or [email protected]. Thank you :-)

MessageI served aboard U.S.S. Randolph from 63-67 in V-3 Div. My brother Fred Drescher also was in V-3 during much of the same time frame but he is now deceased. Enjoy the anual ship reunions and have reconnected with several old shipmates and have made a lot of new friends. She was a great ship and I have a lot of good memories of her.

MessageMy dad, Kent Johnson, was on the Randolph from 1960-62 ( I think).
Definitely during the John Glenn splashdown/retrieval, Bay of Pigs and the incident with the Russian sub. He is alive and healthy, doing construction work as a contractor. He's not really computer enabled though, so I am writing on his behalf.

He was hoping for a possible 50th anniversary reunion with the '62 Randolph crew in 2012 and, if at all possible, with John Glenn. I am not sure if there has been any plans floated around like this but I felt I needed to at least put this out there for him. His Navy days are always an interesting conversation and I feel like it is pretty important to him. I can only imagine that a 50th reunion of this type may be important to a lot of other people as well.

If there may already be something in the works please let us know about it. If not, feel free to take this idea and run with it.

I am sure he would also be interested to hear from anyone who was onboard ship with him.
my email is [email protected] I'd make sure he sees it if you reply.
But, if interested, you could contact him directly at 912-634-1450

thanks,
Kam Johnson

MessageI served on the USS Randolph as a radioman from June 1965 until June 1967.

I have a number of photos from my tour. One was a nice glossy 8x10 of the ham radio operators (K2JSR) (including myself). Back then, the only means of voice communication back home was through ham radio. And the Special Services department aboard ship give us plenty of money to buy whatever equipment we needed!

I have so many stories I could relate...

MessageI was aboard the Randolph from July 56 thru Feb 58, Served in Air operations as Ac3 along with 6 other ACs that partly worked CCA(carrier controlled approach). Enjoyed the experience and would welcome contact with other shipmates from that era. There was only 7 ACs aboard(was almost a new rate at that time), we shared the Photographer Mates living quarters. Only seen one shipmate since leaving the Randolph. That was Jerry Tesmer, we met at NAS JAX in the mid sixties and tossed a few!!
