MessageMy condolences to Dave Norris 's family. I served with Dave in his time on our ship. I was privileged to attend his wedding. I have been unable to attend the reunions since Indianopplis but my heart has always been there. Dave did an outstanding job in developing our group and by locating a lot of us. It had to be a labor of love, he will be greatly missed. He helped a lot of us keep up with friends of our youth.

MessageThanks Jimmie, I can't think of anyone who I would have been more excited to see your dad. The tells we could tell! Some day we will get that opportunity and I'm looking forward to it! Thank you for sharing the pictures with the Spangler website. They were great, especially the opportunity of seeing your dad and his hobbies following his navy years.

MessageFirst of all, I would like to say to all of you, THANK YOU for serving your country and protecting us and our beliefs as a nation. Next, I would like to say that I am very proud of my father(Jimmie VanHorn) who had such a great bunch of men like you to serve with. Thank you for putting all those pictures of my dad and grandpa on this site. He was very proud to have served with guys like you. He told me many times about serving with you guys on the Spangler. He was planning on going to the next reunion when he started having problems related to his cancer. He wanted to go to the reunion so very much to see you all again but he just couldn't overcome the weakness and pain. He passed at home with his family and went peaceful. I know he will see you all again someday. With all my love and respect for you all, Thank you. [email protected]

MessageI recently dreamed about the pas when I we t aboard as a new SA, she was at Hunters PA in SF. 3 months in the deck deck force. I was not cut out to be a BM. I got into the Radar gang. Spent 2 months as a mess cook. Got to go to class A Radar school. Came back aboard in Dec '51, took exam for 3rd classpassed. I was 18. Worked under a good 2nd class, Melenda. Dec 52 took exam for 2nd class, became LPO radar, age19. Then became LPO of Ops Div. Burr Hulu was X2 L DR Laws was CO, Ltd Harvey L Smith was Ops Officer. All of these were great officers to serve u der. Took exam for 1st class in Dec 53,passed and promoted 4 15 54. Discharged 5 27 54 after serving 3 years 9 months 9 days 2 hrs 2 in in the USN, almost 3 MO the before my 21st bd. I had a good tour in the USN and consider re up but after having an erosive with the CO that replaced Capt Laws I had all I wanted of officers that were Chicken S---. I met a lot of good people during my time aboard and Remer most of the good times and a few of the mid watches, in port and at sea. During my time aboard I served as MAA, GUARD Mail PO. It fell my lot to escort several screw ups to the Naval Station Brig. I often wonder how some of them ended up. Forgive me, these are the thoughts and memories of an 81 year old about his youth.
