MessageWatched a move this evening on Netflix about an all black crew aboard a Destroyer Escort during WWII. Excellent movie! The title was "Proud." Made me proud just seeing what they accomplished!

MessageI came across a USS Spangler DE-696 license plate holder on Amazon this morning for $12.99. Naturally I had to order a couple. A search for "USS Spangler" on Amazon is all you'll need for locating the site if interested.

MessageI have seen that movie several times. I tend to,watch any movie about our Navy, partcicuraly about DDs, DEs or subs. Kimberly RD2, biessRD2 and I made. Day trip on a sub just to see how the "other" side worked. I made a decision , not a bubble head, total uncomfortable when we dived and very happy when we surface and I got back to our ship.
How do I give you some names to id u know photos on the slide showstopper?

MessageThanks, Jim, for the heads up. I'll see if I can get my hands on a copy. I watched the movie "Enemy Below" the other night. The DE in the show is a sister ship to the Spangler, so seeing it brought back lots of memories. Yes, it's gone quite on the Spangler website. So seeing your note made my day. Thanks!

MessageIf you have an interest in naval history and particularly history of the DEs, get a copy of "Sea Classics" magazine, August 2015. It has Avery interesting article about DEs vs U Boats. Have all my Spangler mates quit posting info? I have not been able to attend reunions but it's great to communicate with friends of my youth. Any body out there?

MessageIt saddens me so much to hear about Dave Norris! I'm so sorry for the loss of your good friend & shipmate, & my new friend. He was one of the first Spanglermates to greet me at my first reunion in SA. The remembrance page created by Wayne, including the eulogy by Dave's son, was a wonderful tribute to an outstanding man. I know he will be sorely missed.

I'm also sorry to hear of the passing of Donald Cooper & several others. I've always enjoyed the numerous sea tales as well as the recounting of history through the eyes of Spanglermates.

My sincerest condolences to all of you & especially to the families of our heroes.

MessageBob mentioned in a guestbook entry last month that Bill Irwin had passed away. I read in an obituary this evening that Bill passed away in Ramsey, NJ July 24, 2014 at age 94. The internet address of the funeral home where his obituary is printed is vanemburghsneider.com

MessageGreg and Jim, I'm sure, speak for all of us in saying how sad we were to learn of Dave's passing. We've lost an irreplacable leader and a good friend! I'm in awe of Dave's efforts he put into seeking out those of us that served aboard the Spangler. The count exceeds well over 400 names - that's a lot of phone calls and letter writing - and a lot of renewed friendships.

Bill Irwin was an absolute delight to visit with at the reunions. I loved listening to his seatales!
