MessageStationed at K.I. Sawyer from December 1966 to February 1968. I was in upgrade training as a 1st Lt. in the RAPCOM. Don't recall the exact date but in 1966 a Marine F-4 crashed into the RAPCON (Radar Approach Control) next to the runway and the 2001 Communications Squadron lost several men in the Air Traffic Control Facility.
I alos remember the 200 inches of snow that year.

MessageSo many memories! I was stationed here from 1985-90 in FMS and AMS and last served in QA. I was there when the B-52 "Black Widow" crashed.. terrible day, but so thankful all survivied. KI was an awesome base, even with all the snow, we snomobiled to work and we skied all the time. I even raced cross-country on our lunch hours!
Its great to see the museum saving history there. I live in Ca, last stationed at Castle. Still part of my heart is at KI Sawyer. I too restore old planes-please visit our site at
