MessageServed in the 410th SPS from Jan.83 to Mar.85. Was sad to hear earlier the base had shut down then discovered it had been turned into a local airport and mueseum! Would like to hear from anyone in my squadron who may remember me. In case they may be reading this hello to Jim Hill, Chris Mayer, and another friend from the hospital unit Jerry Hunt. I miss my old friends there but not those Michigan winters, in those beat up trucks or walking the gap in the alert area. I now live in Georgia, where the winters are very mild. Hope to make it up there someday to see how the base looks. Does not sound good from some prior messages. Good memories I will always have though. smilie

MessageI was stationed at K.I. Sawyer from 1966 through 1970. I was assigned to the 410th FMS (AGE) and S/Sgt. Raymond Walker was my last ncoic. I just got a chance to go back and look at the base after all these years. I was there on July 7th, 2009 and was surprised and disappointed of all the buildings and equipment going to waste. Lots of memories of the men I worked with in the frigid temps and winds not counting the snow drifts. We dispatched trucks to carry maintenance crews to the flight line and delivered and picked up ground equipment from flight lines and alert areas. May God bless you all for your military time. I will never forget.

MessageAfter 17+ years, I've finally went back to K.I. Sawyer AFB. Man talk about a trip down memory lane. Took my two youngest children with me & showed them the entire base, including the back side of the alert area! (Woulda been shot iffin tried that 18 years ago!)

The grand old place is sure run down & wow has it changed! Bout broke my heart to see it like that. They got a lumber operation where the WSA was & nuttin' on the old alert area. Moved the air traffic controller tower to the OTHER end of the runway. The hospital is an old boarded up building with asbestos warnings on it!!! Two of my kids were born there!

Tried to find the old guardmount building, (was in the 410 SPS), but it seems to be gone. Wanted to visit the Heritage Museum but seems it wasn't open???? What's up with that?

Anyways... still trying to connect with some of the folks I served with. 84 - 91 in the 410 SPS! Yall have a good July 4th!

MessageHey guys. Great website. I am finally going to quit working on airplanes.
Going to quit Lockheed Martin on 10 July 2009.

Just reviewed the site again. Makes my heart go pitter pat. I can't remember
so could someone send me an email describing what snow looks like or a nice
picture of a few snow piles or drifts. Cold here is 50.

It did snow here (Panama City FL) one day in 1980 something. It lasted hours
and we were all stranded.

Hello to everyone at McGuire, Duluth, and K I Sawyer that had fun with the
F-106 and the 11th and 87th and 539th FIS.

McGuire Oct 1956 to March 1960, 539th

Duluth June 1964 to Oct 1969, 11th and 87th

KI May 74 to Sep 77, 87th

Drop me a line and we can talk about old times - [email protected] -

MessageSpent my first 5+ years of active duty at K.I. without a doubt my best assignment. Eating pasties from the American Legion, listening to bands at the club, eating pizza from either PizzaLand (off base) or the Jet Stream/Pizza Hangar. Hanging out at Spanky's (club inside Holiday Inn in Marquette), going to the Upperdome...man what a tour, would love to make a trip back up there just to walk around and see the best USAF base in the CONUS...family, friends, good times.
