| Message | Sorry about this but I forgot to put the email address in the public spot. Planning to be at the reunion this Aug and hoping to see a lot of the old timers of the 87th FIS. I was the Commander's Secretary until I was transferred over to the SAC side of the house in DO. When the base closed, I was sent to Tinker AFB and thought I was going to work with aircraft folks but I had a rude awakening, it was completely different. I finally transferred to Eglin AFB FL (my hometown) and Ski followed. I retired 9 Jan 2009 with 36 yrs. I really miss KI Sawyer but have met a lot of folks from KI here in Navarre/Ft Walton Beach, small world. I keep in contact with Lela Murphy, Anne Curtice, Kevin from the 410th, Laura Neason, Maj Greeley, Jerry Murphy, Van AlStyne, Norm/Char Winner and Virginia/Tom O'Grodnick. Would like to hear from some others. Marge Nielsen passed away I was told. Hoping to see you all on the third of Aug. Take care and be safe on the roads. | Message | After 33 years I recently visited northern Michigan. Geoff Smith, former USAF and "marvelous tour guide" gave me a tour of the base (I was there in 1978-1980)and the museum. It brought tears and smiles to my face and heart. It is a wonderful museum and we all must support it. Anyone who was stationed or worked on the base know how special those times were. I plan to do regular giving and hope others will consider the same. Thank you so much for the tour, the visit and sharing. susie |

| Message | I was at KISAFB April 1966 to March 1968 in 410th Supply POL. I don't remember many names except for Al Singer from New jersey, Fritz, Snyder, Jim Beam, Jim Baglin, and Ocasio. Hung out at the Roosevelt bar sometimes. Hope to visit someday. Left KI for Mactan Island in the Philippines south of Clark AFB. |

| Message | My Dad (MSgt Michael Nehila) was stationed out at KIS between 1972-1976. He was a crew chief for the 87th FIS. I don’t know what bird he was assigned to but we have a picture of him by the “City of Marquette” F-106. He was also up at Duluth (11th FIS) and McCord AFB’s (318th FIS). Reading up on the 11th FIS, it got moved from Duluth up to KIS in 1971. He retired from the Air Force after 20 years and we moved from Michigan to Washington State where he got hired on at the Boeing Co. and did 22 years with them before he retired. Unfortunately my Dad passed away some 14 years ago but I loved seeing the airplanes and building models of the F-106. His passion for airplanes wore off on me and I currently work for Boeing on the 737. I was an Air Force kid but I remember the UP fondly. The cold and the snow stood out. I learned to use a snow blower before a lawn mower. We lived in Gwinn and I remember the big trek as a kid to go to Marquette. Marquette had the only McDonald’s as I remember (fast food wasn’t a staple as it is today). I remember the F-106 sonic booms, the KC-135’s and B-52’s roaring overhead. I remember learning to drive a manual at 12 years old on the back roads in Michigan because there was no one on them. I look back on my time there as a kid and it was a much simpler time indeed. |

| Message | Arrived at KI in December of 1961, & left in August of 1965. Had left El Paso, TX in a "cold" (45º) morning, and got to Marquette around 3am to discover that the airport thermometer measured a nice 27º degree temperature ... except it was BELOW zero!! I thought for sure I was going to die right there & then! After two years, enrolled at NMU in Marquette, and upon my discharge went on to earn a doctorate degree from New Mexico State. While at Sawyer, I was part of the boxing team for three years during which I was lucky to win two state titles & to proudly represent Sawyer. After obtaining my degree, went on to teach at University of the Pacific in CA, and then at San Diego State University for nearly twenty years. I still keep in touch with one of my AF buddies who now lives in Ishpeming. Sure would love to hear from anybody who remembers me!! My ph.# is 915-373-8215, and email at [email protected]. |

| Message | Eldest dependent son of Earnest W. Ray Electronics Technician. As I recall he maintained the F-106 with the 87th FIS. We lived on Mustang Dr. 1968-69. Father volunteered for Vietnam to get out of the cold. We lived in Bermuda the previous 4 years so it's understandable. I loved it for the short time period there. I have never been that cold in my life. Also I have never seen a larger nor a more voracious mosquito in my life. Lost plenty of blood to those critters. |
