Wow, finding this site is great. I was a student in 1972-73. Much thanks to Kurt Hessler, Ham Williams, Ivan Perry, Jim Fitch, Don Hill, and everyone else. I spent about 24 active years on air. Recent turns of radio force me to sideline into IT work, but thanks to all at DM

Hi! I was a Don Martin Student in 1980. Wow! how time flies. I was so amazed to find this web. It's fantastic. Congratulations for such a good idea. I have such good memories of my days at Don Martin. It was so much fun to learn the skills that opened so many doors for me. Darrel Wayne was our radio instructor, and became a good friend. I lost track of him. Do you know his whereabouts? I returned to Madrid, Spain, and worked in publicity. Then became manager of the main sports publicity company in Spain. After that I opened my own Company and live happily ever after. Thanks for your awesome website. Lenore

Hi Ed, I'd forgotten the station owner's name until you mentioned it. He didn't hire me; the program director did. Rarely saw Norm, he'd come in a few times a week to cut commentaries for hourly play usually railing on about welfare bums and such while paying his staff an unlivable wage. I remember grinding my teeth when shoving in the cart.

I was at DMSOR&TV in September of 1966. Ivan Perry taught the FCC License class, Jim Finch worked with voice and Cy Harley (I'll never forget that name) taught studio operation. I was a kinda shy young guy straight out of high school. I thought they did a great job. Tim Matheson (Animal House fame and many others)was there at the same time. I left there and went to KTHO in Lake Tahoe. The best way to find out how much you don't know is to get a job on the radio talking 6 hours a day when your only 19 years old. I remember 2 guys I used to pal around with. Greg Pellant and Keith Wynowski. He used the name Keith Wade in radio. If you guys are out there. Shoot me an email. I really enjoyed finding this site. Thanks

Hi Glenn,
The KMCM Mugs were before my time,we were lucky to have coffee, but I do remember the cattle. I think old Norm thought more of those's damn cows than he did of his staff.
Did he make you a lot of promises when he hired you? he never paid off on the ones we were promised.

Oh-my-gosh...never did I think I'd find this web-site! I was a Don Martin student in 1967-68 and seeing Ivan's photo brought back many memories of having the FCC 3rd class license pounded into our heads. I was working for Thrifty Drug Stores Main Offices, then KHJ as a mail room clerk, while going to school. I remembered Don Steele ("The Boss" and some of the other crew at KHJ-FM. I was working for Paramount prior to going into the Navy in '69. I was supposed to do an interview with Armed Forces Radio...but that was thwarted. Instead, I worked with the Nat. Defense Agency in Vietnam and got out in '73, spending 2 years in Asia. I was a Sheriff's dispatcher for 14 years in Spokane County, WA. I got my BA (Psychology) at Eastern WA University and Master's in Counseling at Whitworth University. I'm currently a caseworker with the State of WA., along with being a former regional and national award-winning freelance journalist in alternative news (2003-2004); I've been published on two continents, so I guess my sojourn at Don Martin DID pay off, in an inadvertent way.
We had fun at Don Martin, although we did piss-off an instructor or two during the time. Howard was very cool and a nice man. Although I never went into radio and TV arts, my classroom time at Don Martin was a wonderful experience.
Thanks for this guest book...very cool and a lot of good memories.
Sincerely,
Rob

I just saw Glenn Endress's comment's regarding working at KMCM in McMinnville, Oregon.
I too went to work at KMCM after graduating from DM in 1963. I worked at KMCM from Sept. of '69 until '72.
During that time I signed the station on at 3AM five days a week and carried a 6 hour air shift, that included doing news brodcast's at noon and 5PM. I was also Chief Engineer and Operations Manager and was on call at all hours. I also set up all remote broadcast's from various Churches, Linfield College and the County Fair.
It was also my job to take all readings from our weather station out front of the station twice a day. My pay for all this was a whopping $500.00 a month.
My very long day generally ended at about 7PM unless there was engineering work to do after sign-off. then it was even longer.
Let me say, It was a very learning experience. I learned where not to work after that, but all in all I enjoyed my 25 years in broadcasting and thanks again to all the teachers and staff at Don Martin's for getting me prepared.

Radio daze..graduated from DM in '71..landed a job at KMCM in McMinnville, Or; 6 hr air shift 6 days a week..on Sunday transported and setup PA gear for the Kiwanis picnic or whatever community activity was going on, then disassemble and return to the station (without pay); all for a whopping $82.50 a week while feasting (existing) on advertisers samples (nuthin like a mustard sandwich). Recollections of playing "Anticipation" or another long cut so that I could run outside to lower the flag, then breathlessly return to the booth. I lasted about 6 months running thru my savings with a wife and child to support. I returned LA, went on to college and a new career.
Radio broadcasting was something I had longed to do..it didn't work out for me but DMS and KMCM left me with some wonderful memories.
