MessageI am a 1950 grad and took my first job as a combo man at KTKN in Ketchikan, Alaska. After a year I came back to So.Cal and worked as Xmitter eng at KGIL, vacation relief at a few stations but couldn't make it as an announcer. So decided to go back to school and got my law degree and headed back to Alaska. In 1959 appointed an Alaska District Court Judge (sure glad I wasn't a good announcer). I'm looking for info on a classmate, Ken (Kay) Brown. Went to Florida and was a sportscaster I think in the Ocala area.

MessageSeems like a lot of Don Martin students went to KREL, Corona. Since it was very directional day and night, that 1st Phone was necessary.
Anybody have any memories of Paul Crouch?

MessageI was at DM in 1968-69. Went to KREL, Corona. Ended my radio at KHQ, Spokane. What a great gift to have worked in radio and been associated with such fine talent, on the air, and at Don Martin! Jim Fitch taught it right. He was a brilliant man. My memories are of night school (drove lumber truck during the day in Santa Ana) and a coffee with Zern Hayden (KCBH), Steven Perry (actor), Coven W. Hardcastle; also Jim Knudsen, et.al.
The pop music of the times are burned into my memory while driving to school. The Doors, Booker T and the MGS, Beatles, of course, and all the others during the "Golden Age" of pop radio. We are, indeed, fortunate. Keep cueing em' up. smilie

MessageAttended in 1969-69. Jim Fitch was who taught me to read, really! I thought I could read until I was critiqued by Fitch. A brilliant taskmaster. Worked at KREL, Corona, KAHI, Auburn,Ca., KGEM, Boise, Id., KHQ, Spokane. No regrets--great memories. Zern Hayden, KCBH, told me of a phone call from Jack Benny while on-air at KCBH. Coffee with Steven Perry (actor), Coven W. Hardcastle, and Jim Knudsen were priceless. Dodging the transvestites on Hollywood Bvd. And the music! Golden Age of Pop. First heard "Take A Little Piece of My Heart" by Joplin on KRLA while driving in to school from Santa Ana. Never forget it! Keep queing em' up! smilie

MessageDate: Tuesday, February 10, 2009, 4:35 AM Amazing, I happened to do a
Google search on the old school and scored smilie Many names of the past,
and remembrances of the great instructors, and those who went on to
the really big time. I was there '72-'73, and have the greatest
memories of Kurt Hessler. Do you know what became of him? I'm afraid
that it wouldn't surprise me if he isn't with us today, but I'd love
to know how he fared after my friends and I left for our own careers.
Two instances I always remember, one when we turned the DM studio at
Hollywood/LaBrea (We had been at Cherokee, but got to see the "new"
school as well) into a Hawaiian motif for our comrade Jack Patterson,
who went on to a great career as well. Kurt was touched by that. And I
remember a day I was on the air in class, and did a station sign off.
Kurt had a puzzled look on his face as it was 5 minutes before we were
due to sign off. I then said, "....and now our National Anthem," and
played Jimi Hendrix's "Star Spangled Banner" from the Rainbow Bridge
LP. The clock hit dead on as the last note played; he burst into
applause. Thanks for letting me share a couple of memories....
