MessageI was reminded about my radio education that I obtained at the Don Martin Radio School in Hollywood when I located my FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License on the FCC website. The date there is July 29, 1988 but I have an intuition that my study period at Don Martin was years before...I'm just not sure?

I received a free scholarship to take the course at the Don Martin Radio School and I seem to recall that I enjoyed every moment of it. (I cannot recall how I earned or obtained the scholarship?)

I'm sure, like others who may have attended, I got my FCC license but I never got a job in commercial radio or television.

In the mid-1980s, I obtained a Certificate in Television Production by taking night classes at Los Angeles City College. There I did very well in my classes but again, none of this lead to any jobs in radio or television.

It's nice to reminisce about all this now...I'm almost 67 years old, living in southern Oregon and working as a bean counter (cost accountant) for a manufacturing company.

But one thing has changed very recently. I finally got on the air as a licenced amateur radio operator (KC6PJR). In this instance, I've had my ham license for many years (obtained in L.A.) but I never went on the air until now.

I would like to learn more about what happened to the Don Martin School of Communications and College of Engineering? If you have some information in this regard, please contact me via email.

MessageI attended DMS '73-'74..great experience, I do remember Bob Luttrell and recall he really enjoyed character voicing. I don't remember the name of the instructor for my FCC 1st phone, he was a very tall guy and meant well, but the class was boring. I went to Indio, CA.(KCHV) for my 1st gig. It was a dumpy, poor run station, but I learned and moved to Oregon and worked at KFLY in Corvallis for a year. Then to Salem, at KSLM, eventually moved up to Portland and did evenings at KPAM--later KCNR for 4 years, then moved over to Z-100 (KKRZ), Portland. In 1990 I transitioned into TV ad sales at KOIN (CBS) in Portland. Those days in Hollywood at DMS were great. Some wild parties in the Hills too-and met some of the top radio talent of the time..JJ Jackson, Jim Ladd, & Tom Yates at KLOS; Rick Carroll and T. Michael Jordan at KKDJ. DMS and these guys are responsible for really helping me get a radio career off the ground, opened the door to some of the best years of my life and created some amazing memories. Good times!

MessageI just scrolled down on the home page and saw the brochure from late 1967 for the school. In the classroom picture, Ivan Perry is standing at the chalk board and that's me in the first row with my hand to the back of my head. I had forgotten about that brochure. I remember the day those pictures were taken.

MessageI received training for my "First Phone" from Ivan Perry in the fall of 1967. The school was just off Hollywood Blvd. I went on to a 20+ years in radio in California, KTBT, KREL, KWIZ and KEZY and in Texas, KULF and finally in St. Louis, spending 8 years in morning drive at WIL. Still work part time in radio.

I'll never forget my days at Don Martin.

MessageMy husband was The Real Don Steele, who not only attended and graduated from Don Martin, but taught a class or two there, and went on to become one of the iconic Top 40 DJs of all time. There are a couple of photos of him from back in the day among the other pictures on the website, but it doesn't have his name on them.

Don always remembered the school fondly and told me how often he and the other students used to beat a path across Cherokee for some afternoon refreshment at Boardner's Bar, which is still going strong today! smilie

I'm trying to get hold of Rog Martin and maybe he will see this note: Rog I've lost your e-mail or I have the wrong one so haven't been able to contact you!

This is a great site!

MessageI graduated from Don Martin in '65 with my FCC 1st. I fell in love with broadcasting while working at our college radio station KBBI and Don Martin gave me the training that led to a very exciting career with ABC TV. I spent many years working with Wide World of Sports, Olympics, and Academy Awards. I am now retired but never will forget the nights outside Don Martin watching the parade of "different" individuals walking in front of the school. I am hoping that the Ed Smith on this site is my mentor in those early days.
