MessageHere are my recollections as a teacher.

As the youngest instructor, only 19, at the school in 1970, I made it a point to dress for success. I bought some brightly colored suits ($25 each) at a Hollywood Blvd store near Cherokee. I taught the 3-month Intensive Theory class which had an acceptable pass rate for 1st phone licenses.

I liked the office staff. There was the effervescent Nancy Nance and lovely blond Linda Munson.

In the Theory department were Ivan Parry (the man who punched John Wayne and got away with it in "Red River Valley"smilie who passed away August '01 at age 85, William Mellenthin, Jr. who was popular for his colorful language ("Read the f***ing question!"smilie He died in 1978 (I think), and Jim Fitch, whom I didn't see much.

In '72 or '73 the school moved from Cherokee to La Brea in the Muir Medical building. We transitioned from black boards to white boards, b/w orthicons to color vidicons, and Howard Townsand to Jack Brown.

By '78, the school was failing. Jack Brown put his sons, Steve and Chris, in charge, but they couldn't compete with Columbia School of Broadcasting.

In 1980, the Don Martin name was sold to an ESL school.

I continued teaching Theory until '84 under the name of DMS Theory when the requirement for FCC licenses for broadcasters was relaxed.

I moved to Medford, OR in '94 where I worked as a board op at KMVU-26 and I finally had a chance at being a studio cameraman at KDRV-12.

MessageI graduated from Don Martin in 1981. I was "on air" at DMS' station when the ticker spat out "John Lennon murdered!", and made the announcement. Even before I had graduated, I had a job at a daytimer Christian station in Pomona, Ca., KLIT. (don't say it!-LOL). That led to doing Church programs throughout LA and San Bernadino/Riverside. That experience led to a Corporate Communications gig for a SoCal fast food company, which led me to becoming a multi-unit franchisee.

I couldn't get "real work", and what work I could get...subbing nights and weekends, didn't even pay my rent. So I put together a group of small stations, got my own advertisers, and covered parades, Civic functions, special events and whatnot.

Some of my best memories were through having worked for Johnny Grant and the Christmas parades as a block announcer.

Not a very "Radio Centric" career (or very exciting) but hey, it all worked out and I'm a happy camper.

I'm retired and living in Savannah, Ga., now.

MessageThanks to John Davis, I was the weekend engineer at KCBH-FM from 1969 through 1971! I also answered the phones for John during his Saturday Folk Music Show and even filled in on the air for him occasionally. I use to wonder up to the station on Friday nights to get voice lessons from Hamilton Williams! I was working at the station the night of the "Tate" murders one canyon over from Coldwater and was visited often by the pet cheetahs owned by actor Gardner McKay who lived down the hill!

MessageI attended Don Martin in 1969. Loved every minute of my experience. I now own an advertising agency in Las Vegas, which I have operated since 1974. Don Martin got me my first job in Anchorage, Alaska and then Las Vegas, where I have been since 1971.

MessageGoing to Don Martins cganged my life dramatically. The day I got my first class license we went across the street to Steve Boardners bar for a drink to celebrate. Mr.Townsand mentioned a inquiry from a radio station in Lake Tahoe (K.T.H.O.) I called right then and got an interview. My wife and I drove to the Lake I was interviewed and put on the air so the owner Bob Breckner could hear me live...A scary thing when Jim Fitzgerald the engineer handed me 20 minutes of news to read with no time to prep...Anyway, I got the job quit my Bartending job in L.A. and moved my fasmily to Tahoe..I spent 2 years there and then went to work at K.F.I.V. In Modesto. It was there I was talked into going into sales...Later becoming Sales Manager. Then off to Sac. as G.M. of K.X.O.A. f.m. (Drake Chenault) K.N.D.E. And eventually K.S.F.M. Woodland where I introduced Earth Radio The first A.O.R. format that was a huge ratings success. That lead me to K.S.J.O. San Jose. My last radio Job..With all the changes in Radio I'm happy to have been a part of Radio then, I'm not a big fan of Radio Today.....

MessageI was a listener in the 50's while going to college. That was in the Hi-
Fi days on an old "Heathkit" and later a Fisher 600-C receiver. What was the name of the theme song? Who was the composer of the concerto?
Thanks,
Bruce
