As the youngest instructor, only 19, at the school in 1970, I made it a point to dress for success. I bought some brightly colored suits ($25 each) at a Hollywood Blvd store near Cherokee. I taught the 3-month Intensive Theory class which had an acceptable pass rate for 1st phone licenses.
I liked the office staff. There was the effervescent Nancy Nance and lovely blond Linda Munson.
In the Theory department were Ivan Parry (the man who punched John Wayne and got away with it in "Red River Valley" who passed away August '01 at age 85, William Mellenthin, Jr. who was popular for his colorful language ("Read the f***ing question!" He died in 1978 (I think), and Jim Fitch, whom I didn't see much.
In '72 or '73 the school moved from Cherokee to La Brea in the Muir Medical building. We transitioned from black boards to white boards, b/w orthicons to color vidicons, and Howard Townsand to Jack Brown.
By '78, the school was failing. Jack Brown put his sons, Steve and Chris, in charge, but they couldn't compete with Columbia School of Broadcasting.
In 1980, the Don Martin name was sold to an ESL school.
I continued teaching Theory until '84 under the name of DMS Theory when the requirement for FCC licenses for broadcasters was relaxed.
I moved to Medford, OR in '94 where I worked as a board op at KMVU-26 and I finally had a chance at being a studio cameraman at KDRV-12. |
