MessageI attended DMS for two years 1972 @ 1972.
After completion, I was kept on as an assistant until I got my first job at KMIR-TV in Palm Springs, I started on as a sign on engineer/switcher/cameraman/ and all around do whatever it took to get the job done.
Worked my way up to Director and knew my time was short because I was making over $100 a week and that was a lot of money for that stgation.

I left for KSBY in San Luis Obispo then on to KCOY in Santa Maria and then to KFSN in Fresno.

I owned my own radio station in Oklahoma , then went on to Satellite TV. It all started at DMS and was worth every penney.

MessageVery cool. I had no idea this site existed until today. I attended Don Martin in 1978, met some great friends, learned a lot, and went on to become a radio personality in Los Angeles within a year or so of graduating. I even returned for a short while as an instructor. I've had a great career in broadcasting that continues to this day and Don Martin was instrumental in helping launch it, over three decades ago. I was sorry to see it sold to Columbia a few years after I left.

Warm regards,

Jeff

MessageJim, I attended Don Martin in the fall of 1967, taking the FCC license course. Although they were not on the air, the KPLA signs were still in the studios on Cherokee Street. They still used those call letters when making audition tapes.
I was told they sold the frequency for quite a profit. Also the cost of maintaining the station, plus the fees that had to be paid, (BMI & ASCAP, etc.) were getting to be a burden since there was no ad revenue coming in.
That was the story I got.

MessageHi, Jim Hilliker here in Monterey, California. I research and write on early radio history of los Angeles, usually AM radio from the 1920 to 1945 period.

As for the Don Martin School, I see they had KSRT/FM on 93.9 FM in 1953 to about 1955?? Why did it change to KPLA-104.3 in '55-'57 or so? anybody know the exact history of the two FM stations at the don Martin School, why it changed call letters and frequency form KSRT to KPLA?? Also, why did the school get rid of or take KPLA off the air?

I see in the 1958 Bradcasting Yearbook KPLA at Don Martin School is gone and in its place at 104.3 is KBIQ, which I think was the forerunner of the current KBIG-FM, corect or not?

If anyone can help with the answers, please let me know and email me. Thank you, so much.

MessageAs an old DMS grad ('62/'63) it's a kick to read about the different class members and their happenings.

I retired from broadcasting after 25 years working in all areas of the business. I must say that thanks to my DMS training, It wasn't to difficult.

I was sorry to hear of Mr. Townsend's passing. He taught me a great deal.

Keep up the good work DMS!

MessageMy father, John W. Roberts, attended Don Martin 1968-69 (best guess). He earned his 1st class, and loved radio and TV production. While he was in school, my dad worked part-time at a dry cleaners near Franklin and Whitley. The store was owned by the parents of another Don Martin alum, Kevin Stern. Is anyone in contact with Kevin?

Dad went on to work at an AM station in Hot Springs, SD, then KSDZ in Gordon, NE. He then spent 20+ years working as a chemical dependency counselor. Although my dad passed away in 2006, he had many fond memories of his time in Hollywood!

MessageGraduate of 67. Ivan Perry 1st class guru, Jim Finch, Cy Harley and of course Howard Townsend. Great bunch of people who helped many of us get our starts. I worked on air at WKY Okla. City, KKDJ LA, KEZY LA, KWIZ LA, KISN Portland,Oregon and of course other smaller markets in the early days. I owe it all to Don Martin and the folks who taught us.
I'm semi retired now living in Las Vegas but man those were the days.
When I entered DM I had some what of a southern accent, when I left I spoke in a perfect West Coast accent thanks mostly to Jim Finch "Mr. CBS" and thanks to Ivan who helped me get my 1st Class.
Ivan Perry did a national spot or two for TV, Cy went off to a great Engineering job with one of the networks in LA and Tim Matheson of Animal House (and many other movies) left to do some Bonanza.
Don Martin was a great school that produced some the best of the best. It's hard to explain the magic of that era at Don Martin. I'm proud to have been a part of it.
