MessageI attended in 1979, & got a Broadcast job in October 1979. Scott Elsworth was a very very giving teacher. He allowed me to go with him to his weekends @ a local station . Those trips where priceless to me, He barely knew me. People like him are few & far between in life. Dr.Parry is still inspirational in my thoughts & actions. A truly brilliant man.The best school of its kind.

MessageI went to Don Martin Radio & TV School,in 1955-56 to get my FCC First Class "Ticket" to be a DJ.This was after Hollywood Hi School (Yah I knew crazy Don Steel)called himself "the Real Don Steel)as there was another Don Steel in my Grad Class 1953/54. Went to Los Angeles City College (Radio & TV Grad). My Mother "Jeanne Gray", had a radio show on KMPC (710)- on the dial) and later on KNX TV."The Woman's Voice"

I knew and liked both Don Martin and Robert Townsen. My mothers sister Patty Murphy worked in the accunting department at DM and married Bill Harpel a Radio Announcer at KNXT and KNX TV. Bill Harpel also worked at Don Martin and was big plas with Don. Harpel went on to build a Radio and TV station KHAR in Anchorage, Alaska. before he died) gave advice and training in AT DM School he was teaching "Voice Overs". Later Bill Harpel helped me in getting a job as an usher and got me permoted to the mail room because there were many DM School grads working in TV at the famous station then (ha big deal) at CBS TV City.
Later went into the Army and was able to get into American Forces Radio and TV, as a DJ on AFKN Korea.1960. After that back in the US was a DJ at KDOT, Reno, NV and KSRF FM which was then at POP Board Walk in Santa Monica.("The Sound of Surf"smilie After working at both ABC TV and NBC TV I became a Broadcast, -and CCTV equiptment salesman in So.CA. 10-4

MessageAfter a semester at College Of The Desert, Palm Desert, Cal. I moved to Hollywood in the Winter of 1969. Don Martin's proved be be one of my life's greatest adventures. I lived on June St. well within walking distance to the school. This time and subsequent events set-in-motion a career lasting over twenty years, and covering everything from engineering, promoting, producing, booking & management to full-tilt partying for days on end. It was the height of Hippiedom/FM Underground Radio and unspeakable hedonism. If only there were more survivors!

MessageWhoa! What a kick to find this site and to read all the great messages! Greetings to all you alums. I attended DMS between 1969-1970 Grad. and fondly remember the deep & mello voice of Hamilton Williams and the voice lessons from Jim Finch, they both had a great influence on my reading and talking on the radio.
The Pastor's son at my church Paul Shakleton, also a DMS grad was attending and I asked if I could come and check out the school, it sounded like so much fun, and it was "all that and a bag of chips!" I got my first phones and my first Radio job from DMS at KLAN AM 1320 Hanford, CA then on to KARL FM Carlsbad, CA both TOP 40 stations that allowed me to be DJ/Announcer,Newsman. I returned to college and worked at KHOF Channel 30 UHF TV during those yrs.
I have since worked for Salem at KFIA/KTKZ Sacramento, CA as Sales Manager and KFAX as Advertising Consultant, KBBE/KNGL McPherson, KS as Sales Manager and most recently with Bott Radio Network as Area Manager/General Manager KCVW FM/KJRG AM Wichita, KS. I will always remeber fondly my beginnings with the training on those old boards in the studios of Don Martin School. smilie
