MessageI was stationed there the Spring of 1964 in the Personnel School. I was a student leader, (wore placards on the shoulders of my uniform.) Graduated first in my class. Had my choice of bases for my first assignment and picked Ramstein but my girl friend talked me out of going overseas and I ended up at Richards-Gebaur in Kansas City. I was a northern boy, so was shocked at the racism that still existed in Greenville at the time. I remember taking the bus into town and the black airmen getting off before we got to the center of town. Two separate entrances to the movie theater. Separate water fountains. There was a restaurant/butcher shop in town. You entered the restaurant at the back of the building, they had great steaks. One of my jobs as the student leader was to wake the personnel students up in the morning. I did this by walking down the street between the barracks yelling "wake up, wake up" Seems pretty silly now. Then everybody would form up in front of the barracks and we would march over to the chow hall. There's more but if anybody else who reads this remembers this time I hope you will respond.

MessageI attended Personnel Specialist school there. Would have been Nov 61 to Mar 62 I believe. Got three inches of snow while there and it completly shut down the town. Don't really remember too much of the base or area. Went on to serve 24+ years in uniform and almost 20 more in civil service with the USAF, finally retiring at the USAF Academy for good in Mar '04. Got my first (A3C) stripe while there. Remember how proud I was. My God, where did 48 some years go to?

MessageThanks for the site. Great job. Many thoughts from those days. Was stationed there for the crash rescue course. Nov 61 to about feb 62. Then to NAHA okinawa.
We never had a lot of chances to go to town so don't remember too much. A lot of beer was spilled in the bowling alley and snack bar.
Retired from the fire service in 2002.
Hope every one has just a grest day.

MessageHello Richard and Keith and thanks for your post to the Guestbook. Both of you were at GAFB about 10 years later than I, and I have great memories of Greenville and the base. That was my reason for making the webpage and adding pictures. They have a reunion in Greenville every year in September if you would care to attend. There is also another group that meet in different locations each year. If I remember correctly, they met 2008 in OH and 2009 in NC. I did not get to attend 2009 in Greenville, but Gil has sent me some pictures I hope to get on line soon. My problem is: we are building a new home and hopefully will be ready to move in by May 1. I might add if you have pictures of Greenville or GAFB and would like to share them, I would appreciate scans of them. Thanks again and keep checking back. ...............gary smilie

MessageThis site has brought back many fond memories of my time in Greenville. The photographs are great.

I was at Greenville AFB in 1964. I was enrolled in the Personel Specialist Course. The base was phasing out at the time.

I was in barracks 256 but can't quite remember the street. I do remember being near the chow hall....which at that time was operated by civilians. The food was actually good.

I will always remember the Downtowner Hotel we stayed in many weekends. It was located just about at the north end of Main St. I will also always remember the hospitality of the Greenville citizens. They were extra nice to us service men.

I will never forget those days. I just hope and pray one day I can go back and visit.
