MessageI was an NROTC Midshipman aboard the Randolph in the summer of 1967. We were nearly deployed to the Med from a NATO exercise in the North Atlantic in connection with the 6-day Arab-Israeli War. Then we became the ship on which the CINCLANTFLT Change of Command ceremony was conducted when Admiral Thomas Moorer was promoted to that command prior to his becoming CNO.

Does nyone else recall either of those two events?

Colin

MessageI served aboard the Randolph from the spring of 67 to the winter of 69. I was in the v-1 division working on the flight deck as a blue shirt, and a red shirt. I went from pulling chains and chocks, to driving the tractors that pulled the planes around the deck. I was aboard when the Randolph took the place of the Lexinton in Pensicola. The Lex went into drydock for repairs. That was so exciting to go from Props to Jets. We went to the med on my first cruise, down to the caribean on another deployment, and to Rio. I had such a fun time crossing the equater and watching the Jolly Rodger be hoisted up on a U.S. Navel vessel.
I was sad when we had to decommision her up in Boston. I had a great time on the old girl and I think about her alot.

MessageHello, My father, clown Emmett Kelly Jr., was on LST 783, the ship that delivered the steel beams for The Randolph's repair in Ulithi Atoll. Here are his notes:

18 MAR 45 – 0830 Saipan - Loading some more I- Beams aboard that came from the Jap Sugar Mill at Sharon Kanoa, on Saipan.

22 MAR 45 - 0800 Arrive Ulithi Atoll – Traveled 360 miles and tied up alongside the AV Jason (Aircraft Carrier Repair Ship) who is tied alongside the CV 15 Randolph. (Aircraft Carrier) Jason’s big crane lifts the I-Beams off our ship, swings and sets them on the flight deck of the Randolph.

19 MAR 45 – 0800 Arrive at Guam and beach on the causeway. We unloaded the Amtracs and haul aboard more steel I-Beams.

Hope this info is at least informative. Sorry to say, I met one of your shipmates in St Louis and have since lost his phone number. He was the gunner's Mate on the fantail the day of the hit. He said ducking down in the gun tub saved his life. I would love to find that person again. Hopefully he has registered for reunions or someone knows of him.

Specifically, I'd love to talk about 40MM and 20MM with anyone that would like to share. It would be awesome if someone remembered anything or anyone of LST 783. Please email at [email protected] Thanks!

MessageMy father, John Maxwell Walker, was on the initial crew of the USS Randolph. He was on the Trinidad shakedown cruise in October 1944 and also during the Randolph's Pacific service in 1945. He was a Fireman 1st Class. I have heard him relate many times the story of the kamikaze attack in March 1945 at Ulithi. I have some additional information about him and his service on the Randolph at my web site shown at part of this entry, including pictures.
