MessageCONTINUED
-I like building a playoff team from the roster we have built. Perhaps we DON'T make moves after each round, or perhaps we reduce the number of players we use but I like the idea of using the core we've each built for the playoffs as well.

I don't think we can fault anyone for keeping their good players down to improve their lot in the draft...is that any worse than me trading healthy players for injured ones? I do that to improve NEXT year's roster at the expense of this years.

Anyway, we are becoming more and more apathetic because our teams are becoming less and less competitive.
I think the solution is other competitions throughout the season (playoff pool) or more opportuniites to even the playing field (5 redraft picks v. 3, bonus picks through the season for PLayer of the Montha awards/Rookie of the Month, etc.)

We shouldn't punish the person who's built a dynasty but we should find ways to keep it interesting.
Thoughts?

MessageThere are a few issues at play here -- the main one is apathy.
This is probably an inevitable byproduct of a draft structured such as ours -- after 9 years, there were bound to be growing disparities between teams...mainly, because some GM's are simply better than others. I think that's fine -- we SHOULD be rewarded for drafting well and building a strong team for the future.
It's up to the rest of us bottom-feeders to decide if we want to stay in the pool and try to rebuild, knowing it could take years to make that happen.
I, for one, am happy to do that. However, there isn't much incentive to be active, read the banter board, etc. in the mean time UNLESS we add some other competitions. For example, a playoff pool. Many people disagree with my suggestion to put money on the playoff pool because that pool is secondary and isn't important. My point is we MAKE it important. The amount of money doesn't matter - 5 bucks if fine -- but it's us deciding we want to compete in that pool as well. That way, there is a remote chance for the last place guys to have another shot (we may have mediocre guys on great teams, rather than vice versa). I would make trades to improve my playoff team, knowing these trades woudl stand through the next regular season. It adds another element of risk and smart management. (to me, there is no point making trades that will be scrapped...I'm not keen on doing a whole new pool for the playoffs either since -CONTINUED

MessageMy official statement is this...I am not tanking, I simply don't care anymore. I feel my team is between a rock and a hard place with no chance of winning in the near future, no chance of improving through trades and too long a road in rebuilding. I also believe in an all or nothing philosophy which means its all out or nothing at all. I don't have the ability to tread water like others. Put me last for the draft, I don't have a problem with that. Will it hurt me? Probably, but honestly, I just don't care right now. Sorry guys.

MessageVisnovsky also had a season ending injury and the Terror should have dropped him and brought up Enstrom or Pitkanen. There is no gray in this form of neglect effecting one's team. It looks pretty black and white - Terror neglected his team and his lack of moves will effect the standings, therefore there needs to be an appropriate penalty. The only thing that is grey is what that penalty might be.

MessageI don't mind the supplemental draft - could be kind of cool.

As far as Terror goes - I totally agree. It wasn't just Luongo that wasn't brought up. He had information on sending Gaborik down at the time too and could have brought healthy players up from his roster at the time.

MessageI'm not sure about this suplimental draft idea. I like smaller rosters, but not necessarily the elimination of roster changes round to round, or the suplimental draft. I personally would only like to use my players, even if they may not be the greatest in the playoffs.

MessageI agree that it can be a very gray area. This situation seems pretty clear with Luongo, but is probably apathy as the driving motive. The motive doesn't change the affect on rankings though. I would say that if the email where Kernel says "He doesn't care and will take last pick" can be forwarded to Rob then it's kind of case closed. I'm pretty sure that Kernel will regret his inactivity in the summer when he realizes he has another solid shot at an elusive FHL title, but the action now is having an impact.

"I personally feel that if the Bruins finish ahead of the Terror in the standings as a direct result of the Terror not making proper month-end moves, this classifies as tanking and action should be taken." - Dogg

I disagree with this, If an action is ruled tanking, then it is tanking. It shouldn't matter if it has an effect on the rankings, and especially shouldn't be conditioned on one team (Bruins) finishing higher than another (Terror). If a team is found guilty of tanking then the punishment is applied.

And finally, GM Terror is hurting himself the most, cause it's trades at this time of year that can do the most to set yourself up for next year. Inactivity from a few GM's is disappointing at times.

I'm in for the more interesting playoff pool. Penguins are comin on strong...

Messagei agree.. luongo's an easy one, but this will come up again and it won't be so cut-and-dry.. tough to come up with a black and white rule on it, but it definately should be addressed..

tanking (or whatever you want to call it) accusations should be aired within a certain amount of time after month end moves.. it's easy to spot big discrepancies with hindsight..

a secondary issue is a requirement on what a team needs to look like coming out of the draft. active regular NHLers in all active roster spots? at least one NHL sub at F and D? with prospects becoming all the rage, teams are able to put themselves one injury away from an 11 man forward group etc.. i've been there myself, just throwing it in the hopper..

so... for playoffs, it sounds like smaller rosters and a supplemental draft with all cuts and free agents might be a go? nix the trades idea and nix substitutions between rounds?

1) teams submit active lineups
2) each empty slot = 1 supplemental pick
3) supplemental draft, 8th picks first
4) sweet playoff action

MessageI would agree with CDogg that there at least needs to be some sort of investigation into some punishment of the Terror. GM's like Phil and Epp have been out of it way longer then the Terror and they have still been making appropriate monthly moves to try and place their best possible lineup out there. We have always worked under the policy that you place your best roster forward every month or risk punishment. We all know that the Terror are having an extremely dissapointing season, and he has been a very important GM in this league since its inception, but his current lack of respect for the standingss needs to be addressed by the Commish.

MessageNow that you mention it, I would like to discuss GM Terror, though. GM Terror admitted to me yesterday that he has indeed thrown in the towel for this season and barely follows the pool at the moment. This includes not making any roster movements at month end.

This directly affects me as currently the Bruins are doing well (props to the Bruins), so well in fact that they may pass the Terror in the next few days/weeks. As I have the Bruins prospect pick in the next draft, having the Terror pack it in is a big deal for The C-Dogg's. Not making any month end moves is basically one-step away from tanking so I take issue with this.

As an example, star netminder Luongo is currently on the farm even though he was back in the Canucks roster in mid January. Luongo has obviously been on a terror (no pun intended) from February onward winning 12 of 13. That is 24 missing points from the Terror total.

GM Terror said that he doesn't care one way or the other and that he "will take the last pick".

I would like other GMs opinion on this matter. I personally feel that if the Bruins finish ahead of the Terror in the standings as a direct result of the Terror not making proper month-end moves, this classifies as tanking and action should be taken.
