MessageThat is exactly the response regarding expansion I expected from Brown. I currently have Thomas, Theodore, Huet, Rinne, Bryzgalov, Roloson, and Quick down as starting goalies who are undrafted and who could be making significant contributions to an FHL team. They are also all far outplaying Toskola. A dcore of Gilbert, Keith, Edler, Quincey, Tyutin, and Kuba is something GM Neufeld would die for. There seems to be plenty of dpeth available Mr. Brown!

Message@ kernel -> zing!

i vote against anything that makes me feel uncomfortable.

i don't think interest in the pool is suffering at all.. kernel is the only mild concern, and it's only because he's been more interested than most and been kicked in the balls every year. so my point is that injecting interest into the pool isn't really the focus of the playoff pool change suggestions.

the primary focus should be to make the redraft as even a playing field as possible. after that, awarding creative incentives is simply good clean fun..

my view on the playoff pool is that it is an entirely seperate entity, so we should be liberal in our efforts to make it as even a playing field as possible. after that, modest incentives attached to the real FHL can be looked into.

i vote yes to everything i've said!

hat's off to the suggesters and the naysayers, let's keep brown's head spinning!

MessageOk I am going to respond to Dogg.

First of all with the wild card points for bracket guessing and the shortened roster, things get equalized pretty well as to who can win.

I kept the real value (1st round picks) in the same order as before.

Adding a 2nd round midseason draft round does way more to help the rebuilding teams than it does to help the top teams regardless of the order of the round. It will close the gap between rebuilding and top tier teams quicker than anything and should be the first thing we look if we are looking to improve parody.

As a last placed team I'm willing to give up the 9th pick overall to drop down as many as 7 spots if it improves the pool on the whole... which I think it does.

There is no full moon clause, my stuff makes way more logic than your argument. And shortening rosters doesn't help anything.

Messagekernel, you only get to vote if you make month end moves... smilie

The suggestion was just for fun, I think it addresses a few things that help the pool as far as year round interest is concerned and adds FHL value to the playoff pool which was what we were talkin about.

Anyways, I figured we're all talkin, and it was fun to throw out ideas I'm not rallying to have the rule implemented or make things more complicated by any means.

In terms of FHL interest:

MessageI am against messing with the draft order. To me the draft order should be the reverse of the standings so that those who finish last have the best chance at getting the good players. Otherwise, how are you going to rebuild? I am surprised to hear the Phillies offer up this suggestion because it would mean that they would get worse draft picks.

The fact of the matter is that those who have stronger teams in the regular season will _probably_ have stronger teams in the post-season. There are of course no guarantees with this, but I think the trends would show it probably isn't often that the first place finisher in the regular season finishes last in the playoff pool. What would happen is that the rich would get richer and it would be _harder_ to rebuild

I think we need to take a closer look at what the real problem is here. If it is just waning interest from teams that are doing poorly, then perhaps we need to simply have a look at adjusting some of the core rules, rather than looking at these zany suggestions like 'if it is a full moon the draft order gets reversed, but only if it is an odd day of the month'

Perhaps it is as simple as lowering the number of active players (e.g. from 20 to 18) so that farm teams are deeper.

MessageInstead of extra draft pick for the winner, I'll suggest the following options:

1. We change the order of the 2nd round redraft picks from the reverse of regular season FHL to the playoff pool standings. (1st gets 1st in the 2nd round)

2. We add a 2nd round to the midseason draft, and base the order of that draft on the playoff pool.

3. We change the order of all of the 2nd and 3rd round redraft, AND we add a second round to the midseason draft to reflect the playoff standings.

Here's why:
The 1st - 3rd overall picks are the real value to the rebuilding teams, from 2nd round on GM's have much different opinions on value and needs so the value lose is not earthshattering for the rebuilding teams. (The 1st pick in the 2nd round redraft is quite a valuable pick) Receiving the 1st pick in the 2nd round is a great FHL prize for the playoff winner.

More importantly: Adding an extra round to the midseason

**gives us more assets to trade, which should increase interest from those who are bored.

**by giving rebuilding teams an extra young asset at midseason as well as forcing them to drop, it should close the window on how long it takes to rebuild. The great teams don't improve much because they'll have to drop value to pick up value in that second round so the 2nd round picks approach 0 as the teams get better.

**it gives us extra value for the playoff winner

I'd vote for option 3

MessageRe: play-off pool

I thought there was consensus on the first 3 - but I guess not. Here's the break down of voting so far.

Du Go Cd Ep Bl Te
1. shortened roster y y y n y d/c
2. no drops y n y n n d/c
3. no $ - - n n y y

1. trades y y n n - d/c
2. supplemental y - n - y d/c
3. bonus y - ? - y d/c

d/c = don't care

bonus = my understanding is that the bonus is a specific allotment of points for picking the series right, it has nothing to do with an extra draft pick.

If we want an extra category for the extra draft pick we can.

4. extra pick to the winner.

So we're still waiting for Bruins to vote.

MessageI think expansion is pretty much out at this point. There is not enough depth on d primarily, and the goal tending position is also quite thin. This would not help the parody in the league at this point at all. Any new expansion franchise would have to wait a long long long time before becoming competitive - Philly will be a very strong team in 3 - 5 years for example. There are at least 5 teams in basically "building" mode - picking only young players - adding one or more would only add to that total.
