| Message | We all know that CEO pay has skyrocketed. Managers and professionals have been doing fine. Legislators have been known to set up automatic raises for themselves. A minimum wage salary today has less buying power than it did in 1997. It's not that the working poor are just lagging behind--they are actually moving backward. The Chamber of Commerce says that the minimum wage is a "training" wage and that, as workers gain experience, they earn raises. The problem with that rosy rationalization is the huge gap between minimum wage ($5.15) and a living wage (somewhere between $8-12 depending on whose figures you use). It can take years for a worker with minimal education to rise from $5.15 to a living wage. And that's assuming he or she is lucky enough to avoid health problems, layoffs, and accidents. |
