I was on the Vickers for 6 years. I also have the 3 Training Pamphlets for the Vickers, (kept them for 60 years) We did indeed use Asbestos String to seal both end's of the barrel soaked in oil. I checked in the pamphlets just to make sure. It's there in the book.

MessageAfter speaking with Anthony (Tony) Keoghan, he mentioned that they used the Vickers Machine Gun in Bahrain, and that the cord used for packing on this contained asbestos. He now duffers from mesothelioma (Asbestosis). Whether this is attributable to this weapon or not, the Vickers remained in service with the British Army until 30 March 1968. Its last operational use was in the Radfan during the Aden Emergency.
He has asked that if anyone served during these periods and used the weapon and think they may be suffering as a result to contact him.
