MessageMy brother Jay Galineau was one of the airmen that lost his life at Dyess AFB in Texas on January 31st. 1989. It was not January 1st. Sorry for the correction but it's a day I will never forget.

MessageI was at KI from 01/1971 till 04/1974. I was a Corpsman with the 806th Med Grp (USAF Hosp) and worked in the emergency room evenings/nights. I lived in Marquette on Lincoln Avenue with my roommate Dale D. Duquette (aka,"DDD"smilie. Our downstairs neighbors were Jim Kelley and Art Voss (among others) who were Security Policemen working in Law Enforcement. KI was a fabulous assignment! I was there for the bomb placed in the fuel storage tank and the guys from the base that died in car accidents on 553. My first winter we had 268" of snow! I was challenged every day. I loved my work and time there and I have often thought about KI and the people that I served with and just how important my experiences there were to my future.

MessageDad was a MSGT working on B52s doing their missions to Vietnam from 1970 to 1972. Me and my sisters as kids loved the area. There were a lot of neighborhood friends to play with, exploring the woods, picking blueberries and swimming in the lake. But poor Daddy (being from TX) did not like being on the flight line in the dead of winter. My sisters and I have fond memories of growing up there and our friends, who we still remember and speak of from time to time.

MessageWas 410th FMS jet engine mechanic 1966 to Nov.69. lived 113 Caribou at back of housing. Road turned to sand and went straight to base dump. Had a big bear come to visit, stood right up on the picture window wanting to get in. Sp's came scared him away. Froze our ass off till the snow covered 3/4 way up the house. Lots of memories, but don't miss the snow and cold a bit. Sunny Arizona for me since 75. Retired in 86, worked another 20 plus civil service, retired again 2008. Any others out there from the engine shop?

MessageTwenty-one year veteran of USAF. Spent a brief TDY at KI Sawyer in 1983 to assist in bomber maintenance backlog. Served in other notable organizations such as: 5th FIS, Minot; 32TFS, Soesterberg; and 305th ARW, Grissom. Loved my time and experience in the UP so well I came back to live permanently in Marquette.

MessageJust came across this site. I was the Personnel Officer for SAGE 1958-60. During that time the runways were closed for preparation for B-52s. Much of the base amenities--housing, etc. were under construction. There was a theater, a few recreation facilities. Not much to do on base, we went to Ishpeming to a bar, or Marquette when it wasn't snowing. Only 6 officers lived on base, in a barracks building that was reserved for us. I will never forget the snow or cold as I sit here in Hawaii. Glad to see the base and times are remembered.
