MessageI was stationed at K.I. Sawyer from May 1961 to July 1965. I was in OMS of the 4042nd Strat wing, later the 410 Bomb Wing (heavy). We got the first plane in August 1961. It was 60-024,The pride of the upper penninsula. Then we started getting more planes, and I was assigned to 60-036 and 60-042. I started as a single stipper and worked up to crew chief. I was proud to have served in SAC. smilie

MessageI arrived at KI Sawyer Jan 12, 1963, departed Oct 14, 1966. I was in the 410th Combat Defence Sqd. We provided all security for the base. To me it was a Hell Hole, several nights I didn't think I would make it to morning. We walked around the planes in all weather. I seen 42 below with 50K winds in the winter. Summer was the other end of the scale air temp over 98 degrees, ramp a lot hotter. A lot of AWOL's, self inflicted gun shots, missing toes, just to get off the ramp! Not a nice place for people who had to stay outside 8-12 hours a day.
I went back for a visit in Aug 05. The place is wasting away, all building falling apart. A shame....

MessageButch, I knew "Z" was stationed with him. We talked by telephone last month after 20 years. I also knew SGT Ron Stevens. We were in C Flight. W I also got a kick out of talking about Axle with Z when we were going over old times. I was stationed at KI from 11-75 to 5-79. What flight were you on. Feel free to send me a e-mail.

MessageGave me a grin to hear about Axle Baxter. How about "triple nickel", the B-52 that was haunted? Does anyone else remember hearing what,we figured, was a bobcat or something that would scream like a woman being murdered? That was a chilly night for two reasons? Who was Sgt Z? Anyone remember Joe Rokser, Sgt Stevens (from Milwaukee), "Bitburgh"., etc.,?

MessageI was stationed at K.I. from Aug 1964 to 07 Jun 1968. 3 years 9 months and 11 days to be exact. (not enought time to make me a full fledge "jack Pine Savage" as we called the locals) I worked on the SAC alert pad for about 2 1/2 years before moving to the staff office which was down in the hole by # 2 mess hall. Being stationed only 186 miles from home (Ashland Wi.)made weather old hat when old man winter hit. I've been able to find a few of my buddies that I was stationed with over the years but would like to find more.

MessageSERVED IN THE 410SPS SECURITY FROM 5/75 TO 8/78. I HAD MANY GOOD TIMES THERE. WENT BACK ABOUT 10YRS. AGO. JUST A GHOST TOWN, BUT IN MY MIND I COULD STILL SEE THE PLACE LIKE IT WAS. I SERVED WITH THE FINEST IN THE AIRFORCE, THE SP'S. I LIVED AT 307 BOMARC. WONDER WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO MY FRIENDS. I REMEMBER THE B-52 CRASH OF 77. IT WAS APRIL 1 AND IT HAPPENED JUST BEFORE I GOT ON DUTY. I THOUGHT AT FIRST IT WAS AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE, BUT VERY QUICKLY LEARNED IT WAS REAL. I WORKED A LOT IN THE SECURITY TOWER IN THE ALERT B-52 AREA. GOT TO KNOW ALOT OF THE CREWS. THAT WAS A SAD TIME. IF ANY OF MY FELLOW SPS I SERVED WITH READ THIS, REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES, AXLE BAXTER, WHO HAUNTED WSA. GOD BLESS, SGT. "Z"

MessageGreat site, thanks! I arrived in 1961 as a 13 yr old kid and stayed until graduation from Gwinn High in 1967. We were the first family to move to the "new housing area" on Fortress St in 1962. My Dad Don Foster was a buff pilot and my girl friend Peggy Thompson lived on sidewinder, and her dad was a buff Pilot, Jack Thompson. Peg and I married while in college in Calif. and I went in the AF as a Buff Nav and spent a tour at Kincheloe and then KI in 1977-81. I returned to KI in 1988-1990. We love the area and the great people who we met during our 12 years at KI. Peg and I have been married going on 40 years in 2008, and have 9 children. Some of them are "Yoopers" born in the cold north. We visit Mackinaw Island frequently but need to make the trip to KI soon.
