MessageI had the honor of visiting Sawyer AFB last wek, while on a vacation. I am retired Army and the closets I have ever been to a B-52 was having one do an "Arc_light" strike for me in Vietnam. I did pat the "old vird" with affection - for all of you. A special salute to all who served the old war-birds.

MessageI was stationed at K.I. from 1972 thru 1976, assigned to 410 OMS Bomber branch. The last aircraft that I was crew chief on was 60-044. My wife of 36 years is from Munising. Her family still lives there so we make trips to the U.P. when we are able. I love the beauty of the U.P. and am looking forward to visiting the museum.

MessageHi Bob, we toured the museum last Sat. the 17th, with our nephew Paul Sonnenberg. We are the ones who also talked with you the afternoon before while looking at the static display of the B-52. We so enjoyed meeting you and hearing all about KI Sawyer. Thanks again for your time. Oh...we just found out you met Steve's parents, Bruce & Ruth Conradson at the Credit Union picnic in Gwinn this summer! Small world....

MessageI was stationed at KI Sawyer AFB in the 62nd FIS AGE shop from 11/65-9/67 and lived in the general barracks. Iowa boy placed into the North Woods of Michigan. What an experience with many memories but wish I had more info and names of those I served with. The AGE shop was a small one but do remember MSGT. Kenneth Abbott incharge of our shop and Maj. Hagan as our Commander of the Squadron. The winters long were and cold with tons of snow but upon return from South East Asia I made Michigan my home state and worked, raised a family, and retired here with a cottage on a lake. I have fond memories of driving my Ford tractor and transporting the AGE equipment to the flight line to service the F-101 aircraft.

MessageI recently visited KI with some 7 other folks who were B-52 crewmembers in the early 70's. My how the place has changed. One thing I would like to correct at the "airpark" however. The FB-111 there may have been delivered to Plattsburgh initially, but it was flown in the 1976 bomb comp by me and my nav (393 BMS Pease AFB) and the other Pease bomb comp crew from the 715th BMS. The sign says Plattsburgh did satellite alert at KI. The AF historian who put that on the sign got it wrong. The FB's doing satellite at KI were from Pease. I pulled alert with them and then I joined them in early 1976. Also of note, when the FB's left KI for the last time, the acting Wing King "Wacky Jack" Watkins asked them to do something unusual when they left. A FB-lll with 4 drop tanks on it doesn't do anything unusual except the "zippo." The last departing 111 did a fuel dump from the the fuel mast between the engines and ignited it with the burner. This laid a strip of fire down the middle of the runway that damaged it. Moral: Careful what you ask for. Col Watkins made Major General before he retired, so it didn't hurt him too bad, but the response to his request became part of KI folklore.
