MessageI attended a meeting of the Special Librarian\'s Association in NJ not too long ago and there was a presenter discussing the topic of Hollywood\'s handling of Librarian stereotypes. As a current graduate student earning an MLIS, this subject is of particular interest to me. I\'ve seen many of the movies containing a librarian character. I can\'t say that I\'ve been terribly impressed. The latest on was \"The Librarian: Quest for the Spear\". Most librarians were hoping for a real statement, but Noah Wyle failed to deliver for us!

We need a movie/documentary that will move people and give them a vision into our profession. smilie

MessageIt sounds like, for the first time, a truly creative approach to the issue. However, when I see it, if a single participant utters those dreaded words, "I just love libraries (librarians)" I'll ask for my money back.

Messagesmilie Please include corporate librarians in your film. I do business, legal, medical and insurance research, as a solo librarian here in San Francisco. People have no idea what I do, nor do they understand why I love it so much. This job is the answer to anyone with a short attention span who is curious about everything and can\\\'t sit still.

Seriously, my boyfriend told me that his friends assume I must be boring. I am so NOT boring!

Let me know how I can help you in this effort ( I already contributed what I could $$)

MessageI love this project! I’m a young librarian working in the academic world and I face stereotyping almost everyday. The problem is, I look young and I’ve been told that I’m attractive (not to sound conceited) thus, I must not be an effective librarian. In other words, “How can someone so young and so cute actually know stuff?” (quoted from a student one day)

P.S. I’ve been dying to write to Oprah about this project…maybe she’d be kind enough to do some librarian makeovers?

MessageHmmm, seems Susan has had a bad work experience. The majority of librarians I know are wonderful, helpful people. Oh, yes, I've had a bad experience with a totally anal co-worker, but do you think things are better in private industry? Try advertising and public relations (which I did in a former life). If you want to meet some nasty folks, try working in those industries. There are plenty of wonderful people working in them, too, but it would seem there is a higher proportion of "baddies." All I can say to Susan is either look for another job or else look within.

MessageI can't wait til this documentary comes out. Bunny Watson has been my hero for years. After seeing the Citizen Kane librarian - and isn't she enough to scare yo mamma! Bunny has been a frequent part of many of my presentations for clients in my special library.

MessageAs someone who entered the library world with an MLS at the ripe old age of 24 in 1999, I do hope you include technically savvy, young and motivated librarians in your film.

MessageAs a professional librarian and educator, I would like to ask if you have included the real personality of the typical librarian? Librarians are some of the most vicious, back-stabbing, jealous, manipulative, and anal-retentive human beings on the face of the planet Earth.

While pretending to be lovers of books and givers of information, many are in the profession because the money is good. Most of them should leave our libraries and work in factories because it is clear they really, really hate humanity.

The worst part is they treat each other like dirt.

MessageI have noticed that "The Breakfast Club" has not received mention. While the movie does not include a librarian the story takes place in a library used for Saturday Detention. I find it interesting that the film makers used a library as a place of punishment rather than learning. Films have stereotyped librarians and libraries through their relationship to plot line. As in the presentation of librarians, we find positive and negative portrayals of libraries.

Anyway, hope the movie continues to go well! smilie
