MessageI received your excellent book just a few days ago after ordering it on Amazon.com UK, and I had to tell you what a pleasure it was to let me wander the halls and ruins of those magnificent locations through your marvelous photos and writings! Anyone who enjoys this website will treasure this book. (It was delivered much faster than was promised on the Amazon site, by the way!) Best wishes on your impending launch, Mr. Blake!
Respectfully,
Ed Iverson

MessageHi Tarquin
I would be very keen to buy your book "Abandoned Mansions of Ireland" Please let me know how I can order it.
Are you any relation to Col.Robert Ffrench-Blake ex Irish Guards, who was a friend of my parents in Castlemartyr, Co Cork? He inherited an estate from his aunt,Miss Norah Ffrench-Blake decd. at Mogeely, Co. Cork near my parents farm. Her ancestors I understand hailed from Co. Galway. While his aunt's old house was been done up he stayed in my parents house at Killamuckey House,Castlemartyr. smilie smilie

T.B> Hi there! my book should be available in pretty much any good book shop in Ireland including Easons, Waterstones etc, outside of Ireland try www.amazon.co.uk. I don't know Col.Robert Ffrench-Blake but there were many of branches of the Blake family all around Galway. (and nearly all of the Blake houses are in ruins)

MessageHi Tarquin, I will buy what looks like a really great book.

How do you feel about these places yourself regarding saving or restoring?

Some would say they are part of Irish history but others would say they should allow these buildings crumble into the earth.

I know some great houses have been transformed by the OPW and others for the enjoyment of Irish people but many of these Mansions you feature were built by Irish blood.

People from other Countries who don't understand our History may see a Country allowing houses like these to disappear as disgraceful but they are not reminders of a glorious period.

It would just be interesting to get your opinion after visiting so many. I believe some Houses deserve to perish. Others do not

cheers

MessageI've come to Ireland a number of times to do photography (particularly in the west) and on my first visit I was struck by the number of abandoned buildings. My friend there told me it's because it's too expensive to clear away many of them. Good thing because I love to photograph that kind of architecture. To me the 'faces' of buildings tell as many stories as the face of a portrait. I really enjoyed looking through your work and am not familiar with many of the houses. Good luck with your book - would love to see it when it's available.

Cheers,
Shannon

MessageWonderful book but oh, how I wish you had included Castle Waller just outside of Newport, Co. Tipperary, which is my ancestoral home. Not much left of it but we do have a pic from 1850 and lots of family info from the Wallers who live around there and the town historan in Newport. I am going to buy your book anyway. Very fascinating. I found it when I was looking for info on Fr Mathew and Castle Thomastown. Keep up the good work. These ruins are one of the main reasons I go to Ireland, besides the wonderful people. smilie
