| Message | I was stationed at GAFB 1954 to 1956 and played the sax in the 3505th AF Band. My first two children were born at the base hospital. Marching down Main Street in Greenville on holidays was the norm just as marching daily on base to the flagpole to play our national anthem as the flag was lowered. When the AF decided to experiment with TV recruiting(no color in those days), they flew our band to Channel 12 in Jackson for Saturday morning LIVE PERFORMANCES. NO rehearsals; you had to get it right the first & every time. Band leader, T/Sgt Ted Byer from Texas and one great leader. | Message | My dad was station at GAFB I believe between 58-62 his name was Walter William Winston. I was born there in 60. He was an aircraft mechanic don't know what aircraft. Just wondering if anyone knew of him doing that era. He's no longer here physically, but is in spirit. Miss him a lot and I just want to learn his history. Thanks His Son James U.S.M.C. ret |

| Message | Greenville AFB was about 35 miles South of where I was born & raised. I served in the Air Force from 1954 thru 1974, retiring as a Master Sergeant. During WW2 The old AT6 Texan trainer airplane was in the skies above our farm VERY OFTEN!! A year or so after I enlisted in the Air Force in late 1954 2 T33s collided above our farm with both planes crashing. Amazingly only one of the 4 pilots were killed with the other 3 pilots parachuting to safety. My Father had to run under a large tree to escape the falling debris. One of the pilots asked my Father to use his phone to call the Greenville AFB. Does anyone know of this or have any articles on this event? I would appreciate any info anyone has. | Message | I WAS PERMANENT PARTY AT GAFB FROM '62 TO '64, ASSIGNED TO CIVIL ENG. PLUMBING SHOP. MR. NEAL WAS SHOP FORMAN. MY AFSC WAS HEATING SPECIALIST, I FIRED BOILERS FOR THE HOSPITAL STEAM PLANT. I REMEMBER BOB EVENSON FROM NEBRASKA AND OTHERS IN MY BARRACKS BUT NEVER KNEW HOW TO CONTACT THEM. SGT. PILGREEN WAS OUR SQUADRON 1st SGT. I ENJOY GOING BACK TO GAFB (NOW GREENVILLE MID REIGONAL AIRPORT) ON GOOGLE CHROME MAPS STREET SIDE IS JUST LIKE BEING THERE. HOWEVER, THE WATER TOWER AND CONTROL TOWER AND FEW OF THE OLD GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS ARE ALL THAT ARE LEFT. AM ENJOYING SOME GOOD MEMORIES. |

| Message | I was stationed at Greenville for Fire Training in late 1963. I was there when President Kennndy was killed! They shut down most of the 'fun' activities for 30 days afterward. I graduated first in my class and was hoping for a Japan duty, but for the first time in several classes there were none. So, I passed on the overseas assignments and waited for a stateside pick hoping for California as I grew up there. But, NOOOOOooo again for the first time in several classes there were no California assignments available! So I ended up at Carswell AFB [SAC]in Ft. Worth Texas. That wasn't too bad as I had family there also. I also remember the segregation in Ms. that I had never seen that in California! After I got out in '67, I became a cop! LOL |

| Message | put a message up on the smith site some years ago - you have a nice expanded site on the base - I spent time at greenville in the Medical Helper Course 90010 in 1963 - I remember going out to watch the guys from the Fire Course go into the Fire practice pit and put out fires. The saying was if you took a long walk at greenville you would soon be AWOL as the Base was so small! My Father-In-Law was stationed at Greenville during WWII and trained in the BT-13. Good memories for the short time I was there - great people and a good experience for a kid from "Up North".  |
