MessageI just came across your site this evening after watching the movie 84 Charing Cross Road, yet again. It's one of my favourites and I look forward to buying it instead of renting it over and over. I was reminded of this lovely story when reading the book "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society", a delightful read which also is told through letters. They both have the common thread of love of books and reading, made real through memorable characters. Thanks for the interesting website! I did visit Charing Cross Road in 1996 and look forward to returning someday soon.

MessageTo paraphrase Helene in a letter to Frank..."I'd much rather read about things that really happened to people who really lived"...this book and The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street are truly classics.

MessageI have read the book and visited this website many times. It is one of those things that is so wonderful about our planet. Book reading for the sake of reading.

MessageI remember reading a condensed version of the book when I was a teenager visiting my grandmother. The story has stayed with me for the rest of my life. Somehow, I missed knowing that there was a movie until recently. I just watched it on DVD, and it's every bit as wonderful as my memories of reading the book. The book has had an influence both on my interest in antiquarian books and in the way I approach my long-distance email correspondence. I had no idea that other people also felt this way about the story.

Message84 Charing Cross Road has been one of my favorite movies since I saw it at our local theater soon after it's release. It's one of the first movies I bought on VHS when we got a VCR and one of the first I bought on DVD when we made the transition from VHS so I am thankful that I can watch it whenever I want now. I had heard about the wonderful book shops on Charing Cross from a British pen pal. We started writing letters to each other in junior high school in the early 1960's just after the Beatles came to the US. She visited the shops on Saturdays with her parents and grandparents and visiting relatives from outside London on a semi-regular basis and gave me a heads up on the book becoming a movie when parts of it were being filmed in Britain. That was long before the days of the internet so I went to the library to check out the book and do research on Helene Hanff. It's such an enchanting story of how lives can become interwined and how people become connected and stay connected over the years without the use of a computer. Since Helene Hanff's passing, I have often wondered what happened to her book collection. There is a scene near the end of the film that shows her lovingly cleaning her book collection soon after she learns of Frank's death. There's no doubt that her book collection (and especially the books she bought from Marks & CO) were her prized possesions. I hope her family kept the collection together in her memory. Does anyone know ?

MessageI became acquainted with 84 Charing Cross Road through the movie. I watched it with my Dad when I was around 10 years old.

We traveled to the UK in 1987 and Dad and I made a point of visiting 84 Charing Cross Road.

I'd forgotten about the story as I grew up, yet I was an avid book collector, always looking for the books that had 'personal history' rather than any literary value.

When I rediscovered the movie a couple of years ago, I realised why.

MessageThank you so much for your efforts in providing this wonderful Website.

Our local grocery store takes in donated books and then sells them to raise money for a local charity. I can't resist going through the books every time I go to the store, and this is where I found this book. Reading it was an unforgettable experience. My husband, who has often said he would love to go to London to search through the old book shops, is enjoying reading it now.

It is very touching how complete strangers can make such a deep and heartfelt connection. Many of the letters brought tears to my eyes. I loved this book and will recommend it to everyone I know who appreciates a good read and a great book.

Thanks again. I especially enjoy the photos. I'll certainly be back often to see if you've gleaned any more related stories. God bless you.
