MessageI will never stop loving Helene Hanff's books and the movie "84, Charing Cross Road". I was on that very road when I was 17 years old, while visiting England for a month in 1969. Little did I know! I had to have passed 84, no two ways about it. *sigh* Wish I could find the H.H. biography, which supposedly be written a few years back, but is now nowhere to be found. Rest in peace, Helene---I'm sure you and Frank had a wonderful reunion!

MessageThe film will be shown on Friday 17 September 2010 by the Friends of the Library at Prospect, South Australia. Thanks to a proper celluloid copy being held (for special uses) in the national film lending collection, we will show reel-to-reel. And talking to each other while the reel is changed. Just as was done in Helene's day.

MessageHello. I have always liked the movie. I would like to know if 84 Charing Cross Road is a real bookstore. I love to read all kinds of books.

MessageWow. Lovely site. This book came as a bit of a shock for me, I've just read it. I worked at 120 Charing Cross Road (for a book chain) for some time and my husband worked at ninety something Charing Cross Road (in a picture framers) for many years in the late nineties and early noughties. We always thought this book was fiction! We were both asked many times by people where number 84 was and we told them it didn't exist as there is no number 84 today.

I always meant to read this book and I saw it in a bookshop in the city in the north of England I now live last night and bought it. I read it all in one sitting and was amazed to find Marks and Co was a real place and that I had walked past the site hundreds of times.

I adored the book and it is now down as a firm new favourite. Thanks for the site providing all this information as I still wasn't quite convinced it was all real until seeing this!

And thanks to the late Frank and Helene for providing such a little gem that was a real joy to read. Now off to read the Duchess of Bloomsbury!

Thanks

MessageThank you so much for the work you've put into this site. I read both 84 Charing Cross Road and The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street as a teenager (I'm 53 now) and loved and remember both books.

I loved visiting this site and learning more about the people Helene Hanff brought to life in her book.

MessageThanks for the lovely website. In 1989 I was working at the College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Nebraska when we were presented with the shop sign that hung outside Marks & Co. Someone from the Board of Directors at the college had met Helene Hanff on a plane trip and become friends with her. She apparently had the sign and gave it to him. The last time I saw it in 1996 it was still hanging in the lobby.

Message84 Charing Cross Road is one of my favorite books. I have used the instructions for making Yorkshire Pudding which are in the book, many times! On a long-ago visit to London, my husband took my photo in front of the old store, which appeared to be just a vacated building at that time. But it felt like a sacred place! How wonderful of you to do this website. All the best.
