MessageGreat ship and a great crew.I came aboard in Naples in 1958 and left in March 1962. Lots of hours in W Division and on bridge watches including having the watch for two capsule recoveries. Yes, the Liberty capsule sank but was finally recovered roughly 50 years later. I took movies of the capsule descending but it looked like a fly spec due to the distance. Captain Kearns was a terrific captain (one of four I served under)but had bad luck with damage to the props in a shallow anchorage. "Clams are coming in the intakes!", was the first hint of the trouble from engineering. I have many fond memories and always wondered what life would have provided if I had stayed on in the Navy.
