MessageMy grandfather, Ernest E. Wood, served aboard USS Randolph CV-15 during WWII (Oct. 1944 - Nov. 1945); in fact, he was a plank owner. He was a corporal in the 4th Division, USMC and was assigned to one of the aft gunnery crews. The night of the kamikaze attack, a buddy persuaded him to go see the movie, that buddy saved his life. He didn't talk about the war much, but I did hear stories about those powered eggs and cream chipped beef on toast. Later in his life, he would talk a little about Ulithi, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Tokyo. One great thrill for me was that he and I got to tour the Randolph before she was decommissioned. He loved attending the Randolph reunions. He was a great man. He loved the Marines, his comrades aboard the Randolph, his country, and his family. I miss him very much. Thank you for establishing this web site.
