MessageEdward Collins Jr.:

My father-Leigh Fitzgerald Sr. was also a Gunner's mate on the Randolph. There is a good chance that he knew your father. I will talk with him, in a couple of days, and find out!

MessageMy father-Leigh Fitzgerald, Sr. served on the USS Randolph, during WWII. He was awarded the Bronze Star, for his heroic actions, during the time of a Japanese Kamikaze plane attack. The USS Randolph was on fire. My father bravely carried loads of ammunition, away from the buring areas of the ship, to avoid further loss of life.

My father is still alive, and is 83 yeras old-living in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

MessageI went aboard the Randolph Sept 63 and left June 65. I was a RM2 in the CR Div. I have many memories of my time on the Randolph, both bad and good. I was one of the radioman on duty when we lost the starboard elevator in 64. We had to send the family notification messages. Very difficult to think about yet today. The good times were when we pulled into Quebec City and then into New York City for the worlds fair.
I have found some of my shipmates and keep in touch with 3 in particular. I also attend the Randolph Reunion Association conventions each year. I have been a member of the association since 92. These are a great bunch of guys that have one thing in common, their pride of being on the Randolph. The same stories get better every year.
Contact Earl Cline or Sal Riza and join us, we want the association to continue. You can contact me for more information as well. Also, if you were a radioman and want to know who I have been in contact with, I'll be happy to tell you.

MessageMy father...Duane W. Beach was an aviation mechanic and gunner on the Randolph during WWII. Always had great stories about the ship and her crew. Never told me the bad, just the funny and the ornery...but that was just his way. I have always been very proud of his service, in fact, I found this site while looking for pictures of the ship to show his youngest grandson...the only grandchild my father never met. The members of my family salute every last one of the men and women who serve and who have served this great nation.

MessageI served abord the USS Randolf from 1960-1962. I was assigned to the V1 division R8 group as a crash control and fire fighter. I found this sight by accident and it brought back a lot of memories. Trying to get the five E,s but failed, working with NASA as the prime recovery ship for the space flights, the crash at sea and who would not remember the Med. cruised and Gitmo. It was great to read other comments.

Thanks jim
