MessageGreetings from Sardinia

On july 1954 several Panthers of VF-144 aboard USS Randolph landed at Cagliari-Elmas in southern Sardinia (one was the n. 405, seem to be 126631, an all metal Panther with black trimmed cockpit)and lined up in the parking apron of the airdrome. I am writing a book about the aviation history in Sardinia and I wonder if I could get contact with pilots who were there, or any other USS Randolph veterans who may have landed at Cagliari-Elmas during their several Mediterranean cruises, and may have taken photographs or could share memories of that visit. I would be happy to enclose them on my history project. Thank you very much for your kind help and cooperation.

MessageI was aboard the USS Randolph in the 1960's. I was a yellow shirt. I launched planes in the daylight and at dark. I fell off the aircraft carrier once during the night launching the plane. I had a lot of good experiences.

MessageI will always remember walking down the pier with my sea bag in September, 1962. This was my first experience of any kind to even see a Navy ship. I was really amazed at the size of her. I served first as an E2 in the PIO Office and shortly transferred to the Photo Lab. I left the ship in August, 1964. I will always remember my first cruise as we put to sea to ride out a major hurricane. Eighty foot seas and wind beyond recording. One never forgets how angry the sea can get. I served in CIC during the Cuban Blockade and was there the night we raised the Russian Submarine. I was the Photographer on duty the night we lost elevator and can vividly remember the ensuing fire in hanger bay three. My last view of the Randolph was looking at the huge scar on her starboard side as I departed with my sea bag. The Photo Lab was a tight knit group and I still have fond memories. I also served under a great leader in Captain Hardy. I have great memories of taking pictures of him on the bridge. I would like to correspond with any sailors that served during this time.

MessageWent aboard the Randolph out of A school for aviation fuels as an AB striker in 1960. Left in 1962 for another A school for Air Controlman (AC). Changed rates to get off the ship. Was aboard for great collision at sea. I had just laid down in my rack when I heard the bostswain say "stand by for a collision to port". I jumped out of my rack where I slept in the O2 level above the fantail and went to my GQ station maning a firehose on the flight deck! Got to see the flames up close. The collision ruptured an armored gas line on the port side. Very scary time. Also saw John Glenn up close as I was the gas talker in the island at the time.

MessageI served on board the Randolph from 1955 until 1958. I was in E Division as a Interior Communications Electrician (IC). Went aboard when ship returned from a MED cruise and was in a storm on the way back. Went into dry dock for conversion. Went on shakedown cruise to GITMO after conversion. Made 1956-1957 and 1957-1958 MED cruise. Great times. After 49 years 12 of us who were in the IC Gang had a reunion at Niagara Falls, Canada in June 2007 and liked it so much that we plan to get together again in October this year in Branson, MO.If you know how to contact any IC men who served on the Randolph during this time, please let me know.
