MessageWith all of the preparations for Hurricane Gustav, I stumbled upon this site and it brought back memories of our own nightmare in Cancun. We were at the Riu Caribe, Cancun, and were evacuated to an elementary school in downtown Cancun. It was so scary, that wind howling for two days, and then the bus ride to Merida that still makes my heart race just to think about. The staff at the Riu Caribe were amazing and stayed with us the whole time, and the employees from Fun Jet were awful. I will never forget this experience, and actually returned to Playa Del Carmen last Sept. for closure.

MessageWe stayed at the grande real caribe hotel in canun when wilma struck the worst time of our lifes we were put in a cinema complex with hundreds of people that started to collapse around us it was pitch black for the most part and very hot the mexicans were wonderful and i dont know how we would have coped without them they stayed with us the whole time. we then had to go into a car park and spent two nights in their it was awful, we did meet a lot of wonderful people who sadly we lost touch with so if your out their and remember the cinema and the car park please get in touch, we got our luggage back on 31 december 2005. I got home just in time to bury my mum who sadly died whilst we were in mexico. I dont think i could ever go back i still have nightmares about the horror of it, so does my sister in law margaret. I just think we are so lucky to be alive.

MessageMy husband and I go to Cancun every year the same week and of course we were there for Wilma as well. Unlike the larger shelters we were in a school shelter. I don't recommend it! Anyway, we have made so many friends that we consider family over the years and with the hurricane have an even larger family now! We have gone back the past 2 years since and we meet with all of our family and have a great time! I will never stop going to Cancun. It is too beautiful of a place. Plus, one of our really good friends is in the Government office there and we meet him every year and learn all about what is going on. It's nice to have a friend in such a high place that we know we can count on anytime. We had 27 people in a very small classroom with no cots (just a few small desks and chairs). We were there for 4 nights and I can tell you it was one of the roughest things I have ever gone through. I love the people of Cancun - they really came through for us during that time. Warm beer never tasted so good! However, I will never eat SPAM again in my life! I thank you and all people like you who have taken the time to dedicate a website to our wonderful time with Wilma. I never want to meet anyone like her again, but I do cherish the time I had with her.

Thank you,
Terri Mayerhofer

MessageHello there,

My boyfriend and I were in Tulum during Wilma at a little hotel on the beach called the Mezzanine. The owners were amazing and saved our lives by putting us up in their house in town. We stayed for a few days after the hurricane to help them clear up a little and wait for the madness to calm down at the airport, finally flying out to London via Dallas on the following Friday. Just before we left my boyfriend proposed. We celebrate our first anniversay in a couple of weeks.

Watching news reports of Hurricane Dean has brought it all back. I only hope everyone out there is ok.

Anna Blue, London.

MessageJust thinking about the Wilma experience and found myself in this site. Was in the Radison Hotel shelter in downtown Cancun for 7 nights, 8 days. If anyone was there, plese blog. We were the ones with the sick little girl. Thank God for the NBC news crew who happened to also be at our shelter. My mother lost it when she saw us on the Today show. Go figure. But she was able to see we were alive which was priceless. I share the opinions of others who say the Mexican people were amazing! If someone wants to whine to me about Katrina, don't! The people in Mexico didn't wait for the government. They started to make it better as soon as the clouds separated and didn't stop. We have been to both New Orleans and Cancun since the hurricanes and it truly is amazing to see the difference between recovery. With both being tourist cities I think the motivation was there for both. Somehow we Americans all think the government should take care of us. That would be more the definition of a communist government. I thank the Mexican people that stayed with us during the storm. With their own families in danger they took care of us. It truly was an experience to be humbled by!
