MessageI sure do remember Johnny Balls or Johnny B------s as we would call him.Pat anf i used to feed the blighter at our married qtr in Crookham at least once a week. And would you believe his name cropped up recently. I live next to RAF Waddington which is the home of the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance. I visited their patch recently and spoke to one of the Ambucopter pilots and would you believe he was ex AAC and was interviewed by Major Johnny Balls when he applied for the AAC. When he applied for the Air Ambulance job he walked into the interview room to be met by you guessed Major Johnny. He is trying to locate an address for me. Small world innit! I sure do remember all the stories regarding The caravanette didnt we used to call him the "stork"? Do you remember my old in the mortars Dick Crawford? I think he finished as a CSgt and lives in Corby but I cant locate him. Anybody know of him ? What is your location at present Tug, i have a feeling you came from North Yorkshire? I have plenty more memories to share. bye for now best whishes Phil. smilie

MessageHow could i forget Maj Stukie,he who when briefing the company on the coming night drop said that Support Company will RV on "The Black light"and then wondered why the snickering was coming from the assembled company, you may well remember Phil the time he left his Volkswagen caravanett down at the Butts end on Ash ranges when the Company where LMG live firing, and how surprised he was to find it now had more ventilation than the manufacturer had intended.
If i remember correctly he came from the Cheshire Regt.this was at a time when most other officers came the the Regt for a 3 year tour prior to going back to their own Regts.one of the first permanent Para officers was John Ridgeway.
There are many tales to be told about "China"Malone but that will have to wait till another time, suffice it to say that after he left us he went as RSM to PCAU Abingdon where i gather he blotted his copybook somewhat and asked to leave(thats what i was told, but can't confirm)
As you were in the Mortars Phil, you would remember Johnny Balls who became one of those who started up the "Red Freds" and later a pilot with the AAC.
Stay low and run fast Phil

MessageGreetings again Tug, The other Turner was Bob I thought he was in AT Pl but he could have been in the MMGs. He is on a picture on the net with the Bn shooting team along with Johnny Holborn and a few more you may recognise. Do you remember our ex Coy Commander - Major Stukie and of course our famous CSM China Malone (i loved tha guy, what a character) keep his mug filled with tea and he would be as happy as a pig in s--t. CQMS Boyce later to become our CSM also. Shippy Shipton, Dick Wallace,Bill Purewal,John Sutton Dave Rignall (Pl Sgt)These were the guys who taught me about Mortars. There are sitll loads more personalities who keep coming to mind but will have to go now Tug, it is time to go wait for it - (Ballroom and Sequence Dancing - i bet you are all thinking "what a b----y fairy)! Still I am not on my own there is a 2 Para guy also goes. He recognised my 3 Para tattoo of which i am very proud. ta ta 4 now mate best wishes Phil. smilie

MessageHello Tug,I did have a scooter before we went to Bahrein in 1961 but it was a Lambretta. Are you the Tug Wilson who was in the Anti Tank Platoon at that time? My father was a Market Gardener living in Lincolnshire I dont think he ever cleaned a window in his life! It may help you to remember me by the fact that I took the Company Clerk job from "Chunky Quarrier" when he went into AT Platoon. Sgt Chay Blyth was AT PL Sgt and Sid Roberts was one of the Cpls. The late Jimmy Grant was one of the live wires of the AT Pl. So Tug get yer thinking cap on, I have loads more names to throw at you. All for now, best wishes Phil. smilie
