MessageMaybe you and I are the only ones left or care for our lady. At 86 seems as tho most of the friends of my youth have gone on. I still contact a Christmas 2 of the of the Radar men that I srved with. Stan Biess and Gene Baum. Gene and wife Sally, attended several of the reunions. I made one of the first, Indinappols, but health made it impossible for othes. Even tho it has been 65 years since I left herm she will always be in my memory.

MessageWayne:I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for all the effort you have put in to keep this up and running. The one thing all of the Spangler mates have in common is tha we are shipmates. Our old girl may have gone to the salvage yards but as long as we remember het, she lives in our hearts and memories. I am 86 and left her 65 years sgo but I still remember every mid watch I stood, inport or underway. Again, Thank you Wayne

MessageThanks Jim! I recall seein the Japanese airplanes with vines growing around them, but couldn’t recall the island. My tasks the evening at Manus was to send a signal message to the ship on when to send the boat over to pick us up, but I was way too wasted. Thank goodness they guessed at what I was trying to signal.

MessageOver the years I have enjoyed this effort by Wayne. If you as have I, take a minute and
Let Wayne know that you appreciate his work. Our Lady (USS SPANGLER) has long been reduced to scrap but she lives within those of us that were privileged to have served on her. Regardless of the year you were on her, we all remain shipmates. I raise my glass to our Lady and all that on her served. Salute. smilie

MessageServed on board the Spangler from summer 1956 to Dec. 1957 discharged in Jan. 1958. Went on the classic Cruise to New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore. Never forget that very fun Westpac tour. Many classic peace time adventures in all ports.
One of the best was on Manus. We played basketball against the Aussie sailors. Got pretty wasted during the game and went with a Aussie sailor to an abandoned airfield with aircraft sitting with the jungle growing around them and through them. Changed uniform with the sailor, put on report again.

MessageA memory just came to me. My last day in the USN. I made 1st class 2 months prior to discharge. Reported for discharge processing. 1st class with no hash mark. After pressure from CPO, Lt and others Iwas told to report to base CO at muster on my final day.. He was aFour striped (Capt). I removed my cover, entered his office. He greeted me as tho I was his son. After 20 off trying to get me to reenlist he asked for my thoughts. I stood at attention before him and replied, sir with all respect I have listened about my future in the USN, you make it my future but once I re-enlisted, I will be just another dumb ass white hat to you. He jumped up and shouted, get out of my navy and my office, I replied “aye, aye sir” and walked. 3 hours later I complied with order.I got out of his navy. smilie
