MessageHi,
I was stationed at Sawyer from May 87 to Oct 89. I was assigned to the 2001 Comm Sq. and I lived in base housing in a multiplex on Liberator. I shoveled a lot of snow!

Some of the people I remember were TSgt Mark Holmes one of my supervisors and TSgt Will Frick a neighbor in the SPs who I did a lot of fishing with. We always slayed the Northern Pike at the Dead River Basin.

Other folks in the shop were TSgt Ed Davis; SSgt Mike Ottensman; Cathy Morgan civilian; Randy Price civilian Sperry Computer tech; MSgt Benzel; MSgt Bushey; Lt. Kinsey; and a bunch of other people who's names just aren't coming to me.

We rented videos and ate subs in Gwinn and went to ShopCo in Marquette. We climbed rocks in Presque Isle.

I remember driving to the UP for the first time and thinking I was going to drive off the edge of the earth if I went any farther north.

It would be nice to talk to some of the people from then and remember old times.

Thanks for your site.

MessageThank you for taking the time to put a smile on our faces, and give us pause to recall some of our best memories. smilie What you have done could only have been accomplished by a group of airman who had served with pride. Correction, a group of airman who are STILL serving with pride. Thanks again!!!! smilie

MessageLeft Ol'K.I. in 1986. Was with the 410 SPS. Not seeing much info from anybody in cops squadron. I enjoyed my time at base, almost 8 years, made many good friends and still keep in touch with some. Looking for Mike Shaw, Dave Eich, Big-John Gillotte, and others. Wondering how your keeping; heard wild-Bill Stanley bought it in a motorcycle wreck in the early 90's. Don't know for sure.

MessageI was at K.I. from '86-'92 in the SPS (Security) side. Haven't been back to the base since we left in '92, but we're hoping to be able to make it up there beofre the end of this summer. Curious to what changes our old house on Lancer St. has seen. Also want to take a look roung the 'AAPA' and the 'WSA' if at all possible.

Thanks for the website,

Jake

MessageGrowing up in Gwinn, just a tad off the flight path with B-52's and KC-135's and yes the 106's flying overhead, I never realized what a unique and awesome childhood I was having. The touch-and-go's and planes fireing up on the Alert Pad and all the sounds are a fond memory of growing up near KI Sawyer. The things I took for granted then are the things I miss... the sound of "jet noise" brings me back whenever I hear it.

My Dad...what can I say. I am so proud of you Ret MSGT James Heinz... still the only person I have ever known to spend his entire USAF career in one Squadron...what else the 87th FIS (Duluth and KI Sawyer). 20 years of service to the same squadron has to be some kind of record. You are doing some great work, Dad, helping to restore the 106. I never knew how important what you did was. I don't think I ever said 'Thank You' so now I am.

I was also fortunate to Bartend at the KI Sawyer O Club (long after the 87th was no more). I finally realized then, what a unique person it takes to serve in the military.

Thank you All for the great work you are doing, keeping the planes and the memories alive.

MessageGreetings from da U.P. ey! Things around here are starting to get exciting. Everyday we see the jet, she gets better and better looking. The painter has been contacted and he is ready to inspect the jet and get started. The decals are arriving any day. She looked great this week as we pulled her outside. If you have not made your plans to attend the dedication, do it now. This will be a great day for 87th FIS and for any one who has ever flown, supported or maintained the F-106's. We have moved the dedication inside to be sure the weather will not interupt us. One favor, if you read this and you are going to attend the dedication, please drop me a short email with who you are, when you were in the 87th and what you did. This will be great information to have at the dedication. Please bring a couple of extra bucks with you too. We are going to complete the restoration but it sure would be nice to put some money back to help take care of the jet later on down the road.
Us "old farts" up here climbin around this old girl would sure like to see as many as you other old farts as we can. Don't miss out! Come see what we've done with this magnificant "Delta Dart."
