MessageIt was very interesting reading about the SS Ascania having been wrecked in 1918. My Welsh grandfather left England on the Ascania in 1911, landed in Quebec on his way to the U.S. Your name was attached to the information page.

Very interesting articles that we are finding in re our now past relatives. Until now, I had no idea of the ship he came over on. My grandmother, two daughters and my dad came over in 1912 on the HMS(?) Haverford.

MessageI have a silver coated tablespoon that belonged to my grandmother. On the handle of the spoon is an insignia of an arrow pointing up with a banner wrapped around it. On the banner is S S Arana. I looked that up and your name was associated with it. Do you have any idea if the spoon is worth anything?
Thank you for taking the time to read my email and possibly to respond to it.

MessageHello Tony, I want to thank you for posting the information about SS Frederick Douglass at Wreck Site - My Grandfather Antonio Bennett Sr. served on the SSFD and was on board when it was torpedoed by the Germans. My father Charles served as a 15 year old (!) aboard the SS Booker T. Washington. - Which was in the same convoy! This is *Secret History*: The U-Boat 645 Commander was somewhat knowledgeable in Amercan History and given a choice of targets chose the SSFD because of Mr. Douglass's firey reputation Vs. the placid nature of Mr. Washington! He did this as a statement to the African-American crew! The damaged SSFD crew members were allowed to board the SSBTW and then the SSFD was sunk! My Grandfather stayed a Merchant Seaman for about 20 more years before retiring to Sailors Snug Harbor. My dad served on the SS United States (during it's record transatlantic voyage) and other amazing ships before finishing his 50 year career with the Port Arthur to Diego Garcia run in 1996.

Thanks Again
