MessageGreat Website, thanks so much. My Uncle Fred (Fred b Quick) was aboard the Houston and was a POW. He survived the war and lived near me in Escondido California. He was always smiling and entertaining. He never talked much about the War. One of my favorite people, miss him and think of him often. though an Uncle thru marriage he was still one of my favorite relatives and was so very good to me. God bless all the Houston crew and all the POW's. may we NEVER forget and find strength in their sacrifice. I plan to go to Thialand and walk the railroad.

Messagesmilie My father and his brother served on the Houston. My fathers name was Benjamin Prentice and shortly after transfering to Subs the Houston was lost. His brother Jack Prentice was lost along with many other brave men. I've been compiling a family history and I came upon this site. I found Jacks name among the dead, but no picture. I think sites like this are needed so people never forget the sacrifices given by so many. If any crew members remember either one I'd love to get in touch with you.
Thanks,
Steve

MessageI plan to give a book review of GHOST SHIP by James D. Hornfischer to Cicero, Indiana, Kiwanis sometime this spring. I was only eleven years old when Pearl Harbor was bombed. I grew up marveling at the ability of our American military people to overcome extreme life-threatening situations and continue with their lives afterwards. The leaders of the Axis nations had no idea of the spirit of our fighting men and the women who supported them. The survivors of the USS Houston were great examples of the best of them.

MessageFREE WWII VIDEO for WWII veterans. I made this video in tribute to WWII veterans, which I was going to present at the last reunion, but unfortunately I was unable to attend. The video showcases different WWII museums and memorials and is set to some big band and WWII era songs. I give one out to every veteran I interview. If you are a WWII veteran and wouldn't mind sending me anything you may have written about your time during WWII, I will gladly send you a video. I do not accept money for the video, just stories. Please contact me with any questions and Thank you. [email protected]

MessageMy uncle was FC2 James D. Nelson. He was killed on the Houston 1 March 1942. I have forwarded a photo to the Association in hopes someone might remember him. My father loved him greatly and his loss was the reason he and another brother joing the Navy in WWII. I am also looking for anyone who has copies of the orginal Navy letter sent to the families that described the action as ours was lost. A copy or scan would be appreciated. They truly were the greatest generation.

MessageMy dad Joe Schertz of Oak Park, Illinois was aboard the Houston when she sank. He was a POW and worked on the Burma railway. I think he was also at Changi. Never said anything about it. About all I knew was that for years we could not eat rice because he had had enough of it. Now with the internet we can learn a lot about the POW experience. Probably because of his experiences he was easily prone to anger. Interested in sharing experiences with other children of POWs.

MessageThank you very much for your wonderful Web site. I am glad that you are taking time to document the USS Houston and its men. May the world never forget their sacrifice.

I have a Web site dedicated to the USS Marblehead and Dr. Corydon Wassell. I have now begun searching for the sailors from the Houston that are listed on my site. If any of these men or their families would like to contact me, I would love to hear from them.
