MessageJohn Ranger was my recruiter when I joined the Navy in late 47. His family and I have been close friends to this day. I am proud to have known John Ranger, my Navy mentor from almost sixty years ago, he meant as much to me as my dad.

MessageMy Uncle Bill (RM2C Claude William Lattin) was on the Houston and went down with her March 1, 1942. I was named in his honor and am proud of that connection, though I would have much preferred to know him personally. All of the men and women in the US military are my heroes, most especially my son, Air Force EOD TSgt Doug Moore, who has so far served 2 tours in Iraq, 1 in Pakistan following 9/11/01, and also volunteered for a compassionate duty assignment in Laos to help identify and return MIA remains from the Viet Nam era. Thank you, Uncle Bill, for being a wonderful role model!

MessageFred "Bud" Bourgoise was my father's close friend. He was on the Houston and died at sea after the Battle of Sunda Strait. Bud was mentioned in Bill Weissinger's book, Attention, Fool!. He was in the water after the ship sank, and spoke with Bill as they floated/paddled to Java. He never made it.
Bud was from Houghton, Michigan, and attended Houghton High School and Michigan College of Mining and Technology.
Thanks to all you heroes out there who served and survived, and to those who gave their lives.

MessageI'd love to hear from anyone that new my uncle Gilbert G. Carter from Whittier CA. On the logs from survivors of the sinking I saw in Commander Wm. Epstein's list of people in his raft 'Carter QM3/c,' that my have been him. There was also a Fred Carter on board (no relation that I know of)

Thanks for all the work on this site, wish I could make the reunion. smilie
