My brother Andrew J. Spillman Gunner mate 3rd class was lost on the U.S.S. Houston by enemy action in 1942. If there are any survivors who knew him it would nice to hear from you.

In researching my father's military service I read of the Houston. My father, 2nd Lt Michael J. McCabe, was a Navigator with the 307th Bombardment Group, 424th Bombardment Squadron. Among other targets, his crew bombed Balikpapan nine times. Best wishes to you surviving crewmates and your families. God bless you. -Jim McCabe

Dear Mr. Smith,
No disrespect perceived at all from our end either. The second USS HOUSTON, a 'Cleveland'-class light cruiser, however, was CL81. There is a splendid exhibit for this fine ship on the USS LEXINGTON (CV-16) in Corpus Christi, TX, and I highly recommend any & all to visit it if they get the chance.
With best wishes,
Don Kehn, Jr. USS HOUSTON (CA30) Survivors Assoc./Next Generation

Hello! I'm a first time visitor to your website. My uncle, Jackson Ruscoe, was killed when his turret was bombed on February 4, 1942. Any information that anyone could supply about him would be most appreciated.

I just needed to let everyone know that the post I made regarding Albert Phillips, who served on the USS Houston CA-31, was not intended to disrespect in any way the men of the CA-30 who went down when sunk in 1942. I have not been able to find a message board for CA-31 so I wanted to post here for anyone interested. Thank You and a special thanks to anyone reading this who served aboard either ship.

Wanted anyone interested to know that Albert Phillips, a crew member from WWII during '44 (including torpedoing on 14 & 16 Oct.) passed-away Monday, April 24th, 2006 in Louisville, KY. He was 79 years of age and still very proud of his military service w/ his shipmates on the Houston. He's survived by his loving wife of 61 years, 3 children & their families w/ numerous grandchildren & great grandchildren who are very proud of him. He will be buried with honor, dignity and respect along with a USN Emblem on Friday, April 28, 2006 and will be sorely missed.

Just checking in. I helped design the USS Houston.org website(the main page) years ago in a class at SCCC. Amazing how much info has been added. Great work!

My Uncle was Seaman Firstclass, Gutherie F. Layne,Texas. His scrapbook can be seen online or at the Univ. Texas A&M Univ. Cushing Library. He was killed before I was born. I did view the scarpbook to see the picutres he took. He was my mother's brother and as a little boy she used to call him Old Guts.

John Ranger was my recruiter when I joined the Navy in late 47. His family and I have been close friends to this day. I am proud to have known John Ranger, my Navy mentor from almost sixty years ago, he meant as much to me as my dad. Robert A. Barth CWO USN (Ret)
