| Message | Steve, I hope you know by now that I'm a big fan of yours and greatly appreciated your presentation to us here in Portland, OR. However, maybe when you come back SOON, I can take you on a forest hike and to an urban lot or two that are full of NATIVE plants so that you can get some better landscape photos for it. Although some of the gardens and landscapes you showed may look appealing to the eye that is not attuned to ecosystem services (i.e., most of the population), as far as I could tell, all of them were filled with alien ornamentals. Please correct me if you believe me to be wrong. See my Sustainable Industries blog article, "Go Native," for reasons you might want to incorporate some focus on native plants/wildlife. And if you ever get a chance, hear Doug Tallamy or read his book, "Bringing Nature Home". Thanks again for sharing with us and do come back SOON! I enjoyed your concepts, My back ground is 24 years in fine home design ,21 years doing my own gig, Licensed contractor 935489, also have ap. in with calif AIA, state ID # 43121,I have 2 years 8 mo.credit I need 2 years 4 mo, UNDER a lic. architect, more in order to take Architects test, My college was school of hard knocks, Listening to a guy like you might inspire me to go get my college degree. I have always loved the business , I do CAD & Hand drawn stuff . Even today it's still exciting though not much Biz.. yes our business is rough these days ,I feel a bit of renewed energy.. | Message | Stephen, I wanted to thank you for your presentation at the Texas Green Building summit in Dallas on Feb 9, 2010. Looking back, your ideas were the most meaningful and the ones that have stuck with me. I work in the construction industry, and have recently moved into a role specifically dealing with process improvement and technology implementation on projects. I live by the mantra that "it has to be beautiful." If someone can't love it 15 minutes after picking it up, we can't use it large scale. Those with an 'early adopter' mentality will always be open minded and willing. However, to affect organization-wide (industry-wide?) change, solutions need to be beautiful. Furthermore, I apply your philosophy of lovable buildings being more efficient. Dealing with technology, it is easy to get swept up in the hype of the new and flashy. My philosophy is that you keep up with technology by deciding to strategically not keep up with technology. If I can use last year's technology better than anyone else in the industry, I am going to be better off than so many organizations who are constantly trying to stay abreast of the current change. I can focus more on implementation. Every 5 years, I can make a step change with a well thought out implementation strategy. Thank you, I look forward to meeting you again. |

The Original Green uses a common-sense, plain-spoken definition of sustainability, which is this: "Sustainable things are things you can keep going in a healthy way, long into an uncertain future." The Original Green book examines the implications of this statement in detail. |
