Message | Some readers might like a fuller account of the side swiping of our towed car while driving through Villahermosa toward Veracruz on highway 180 that was very congested due to road work. John, driving, asked for and received signalled permission from the driver of a trailer truck in the left lane to move into that lane. He watched our towed car on the backup TV monitor during the maneuver. Shortly thereafter, a truck towing two trailers piled high with scrap metal pulled abreast of us on our right, the driver gesturing wildly to me, in the passenger seat, that we should pull over, which we did at a Pemex station, where we were shortly joined by the truck whose driver had given John permission to move into the left lane, who joined the driver of the scarp metal truck. We then learned for the first time that the left side of our towed car had been side swiped. The right corner of the huge steel bumper of the scrap metal trailer had been pulled forward. Its driver insisted that we had caused the damage and demanded money. It being obvious that our Honda could not have inflicted the damage, and that a scam was underway, we insisted on waiting for the police and then for our insurance adjuster. When the verdict was given that if the driver insisted that we were responsible for the damage to his truck and if we denied it, then all three vehicles would be impounded until a police investigation were concluded, the driver decided that he would not claim such responsibility. |
