MessageGeorge:

I read your excellent article on the SciAmer website blogs.scientificamerican.com/critical-opalescence/2014/05/23/ -thermodynamics-guest-post/

regarding the second law of thermodynamics and time travel. I wanted to bounce an idea off you regarding the first law which is not something I have seen discussed in regard to time travel. Perhaps I simply missed the discussions, but I have not found any articles on it so far. Feel free to ignore this if I have rediscoverd something already known or if I am completely off track.

I think the first law more clearly invalidates the theory of time travel and does it in an easy to understand way. Perhaps this is something that could help you in your future articles.

The first law of thermodynamics is conservation of energy and therefore mass since e=mc2 so within any closed system the total mass-energy cannot change. It could be argued that the universe is not subject to this limitation because the universe could conceivably interact with other universes or "things" so I will limit my example to the closed system of the Earth+Solar System. I will also assume the person is moving back and forth in one timeline and not jumping to another universe(which I find an invalid theory, but that is another discussion). Continued in next message.

MessageI never do this but just had to say The Complete Idiot's Guide to String Theory was awesome. The subtle humor and inside jokes were great and it's a great entry point for someone like me, BSEE and MSEE with a never-ending interest in physics and the mystery of it all.. I'm planning to dig deeper so the reading list is great as well. Thank You! smilie

MessageSUBJECT: Interest in receiving the American Physical Society Tip Sheet for the press?

Dear George,

I am writing to you as the Deputy Editor of Physics (physics.aps.org), the online publication of the American Physical Society - publisher of Physical Review Letters, Review of Modern Physics and other top physics journals.

In our efforts to stimulate the communication of physics, we send out a weekly tip sheet for the press (I can send you an example if you wish), in form of an email containing brief synopses of upcoming press-worthy papers. It is distributed to a broad spectrum of recipients (including BBC, Nature, Science, New York Times, Le Monde and many more).

We think the APS Tip Sheet may be a good source of inspiration for stories in all areas related to physics and we'd be delighted to have you as one of our recipients. The service is free of course. I would also like to mention that the APS offers to credentialed journalists free access to its catalogue of publications .

Best regards,

Matteo

MessageHi George,

I am a producer with the World Science Festival in New York. We are organizing our programs for the May 2015 festival and I was interested in speaking with you about your availability and the possibility of moderating a program for us.

Can you let me know how we can connect?

Thanks,
Mona
